Solar development plan to undergo scrutiny

A plan by the federal government to build a massive solar power generation system on public land in Colorado is set for a public hearing before proceeding. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management wants to lease about 22 million acres of publicly-owned land in Summit County, Colorado, to develop renewable energy projects including a large solar generation system, according to a report from the Summit Voice. March 5 saw the inauguration of Florida Light & Power's Martin Next Generation Solar Energy Center in western Martin County, Fla. The facility is a 75MW, 500-acre farm of more than 190,000 solar thermal mirrors, connected to an existing CCGT plant, capable of producing dispatchable power while generating significantly lower carbon emissions than conventional gas-fired facilities. The city of Chicago has signed a deal to buy $2.5 million worth of solar-powered trash compactors for the city's central business district, officials said. The city has contracted with a Massachusetts company for 400 trash compactors for the business district where pedestrian traffic is heavy and trash bins require frequent collections, the Chicago Sun Times reported.
