Solar power future for glass pyramids?
MSNBC    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Cityscapes of glass-clad buildings gleaming in the sun make Anna Dyson think about wasted energy. Dyson heads the Center for Architecture Science and Ecology, or CASE, a research consortium that wants to turn office windows into multifaceted solar power generators. Their "integrated concentrating dynamic solar facade" consists of grids of clear pyramids that help focus the sun's rays to generate energy. More

Mitsubishi Electric sets new PV cell efficiency records
SolarBuzz    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Mitsubishi Electric has achieved a photoelectric conversion efficiency of 14.8 percent in a 5mm x 5mm thin-film silicon photovoltaic cell. The thin-film silicon PV cell developed by Mitsubishi Electric has a triple junction structure that utilizes a majority of the solar spectrum for higher efficiency. Mitsubishi Electric says Multi-junction layers offer an efficient way of raising conversion efficiency in thin-film silicon PV cells because each layer absorbs different wavelengths of sunlight. In former swamplands teeming with otters and wild hogs, one of the nation's biggest utilities is running an experiment in the future of renewable power. Across 500 acres north of West Palm Beach, Fla., the FPL Group utility is assembling a life-size Erector Set of 190,000 shimmering mirrors and thousands of steel pylons that stretch as far as the eye can see. When it is completed by the end of the year, this vast project will be the world's second-largest solar plant. More

Alternative-energy push gets bipartisan support
