Solar industry learns lessons in Spanish sun

Two years ago, this gritty mining city hosted a brief 21st-century gold rush. Long famous for coal, Puertollano discovered another energy source it had overlooked: the relentless, scorching sun. Armed with generous incentives from the Spanish government to jump-start a national solar energy industry, the city set out to replace its failing coal economy by attracting solar companies, with a campaign slogan: "The Sun Moves Us." MEMC's SunEdison unit to build Italian solar plant, Europe's biggest

The U.S. Navy awarded a $200 million contract to construct solar photovoltaic power plants producing up to 40 megawatts of electricity at Navy and Marine Corps bases throughout the Southwest. The Navy contract is the latest development in the U.S. military's move to dramatically increase the use of solar electricity at its facilities across the country. More

The U.S. could source 10 percent of its electricity from solar power by 2030, a report said, winning support from a US lawmaker who wants to boost the number of U.S. solar panels. The report, produced by the independent environmental group Environment America, was presented to Congress with backing from Senator Bernie Sanders who in February introduced legislation to install 10 million solar panels across the U.S. within a decade. Global Solar photovoltaic installations reached 6.43GW in 2009, an increase of 6 percent over 2008, according to a new report from Solarbuzz, which was recently acquired by The NPD Group. According to the market research firm, this is a new record for installations and generated $38 billion in global revenues. More
