US Army base activates Schott solar photovoltaic system

Leadership of the U.S. Army's base at Fort Hood, Texas, along with Universal Services Fort Hood, Axium Solar and Schott Solar PV, recently announced the activation of a 684-kilowatt photovoltaic system at the base's Liberty Village Military Housing. The 3,000 Schott Solar PV panels were installed as part of the Army's nationwide residential community initiative at no cost to the military. The 4-acre ground-mount solar energy system will generate an estimated 1,000,000, kilowatt-hours of energy annually, which is roughly 20 percent of the energy consumed in the 300 homes at Liberty Village. More

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory issued a report providing cost analysis for photovoltaic installations in the U.S. This report provides detailed road maps to evolutionary photovoltaic system price reductions and performance improvements. By 2020, these road maps would enable U.S. photovoltaic systems to approach the Energy Department's SunShot Initiative price targets.

Hoku Solar Inc. recently announced the signing of an agreement with a subsidiary of Alexander & Baldwin Inc. to design and build the 7.2-megawatt Port Allen Solar Farm on the island of Kaua'i, Hawaii. Hoku Solar will partner with Helix Electric Inc., one of the largest electrical contractors in the U.S., to construct the photovoltaic facility, which is expected to be placed in service in late 2012. Department of Energy awards $481,473 for solar panel installation in Connecticut

The Energy Department has awarded Connecticut $481,473 to reduce costs associated with the installation and use of rooftop solar panels. Gov. Dannel P. Malloy recently announced the award of the so-called SunShot Initiative funds. The money will be used by the Clean Energy Finance and Investment Authority to improve financing options for homeowners and small businesses that install the panels, as well as to streamline the permit process and continue to link the systems to the electric grid. More



German coalition strikes compromise on solar cuts

Leaders of the lower house of parliament in German Chancellor Angela Merkel's coalition have reached a compromise agreement on cuts in solar power incentives with the upper house after weeks of negotiations, sources told Reuters. The deal will be a big relief for Merkel's coalition because the upper house, the Bundesrat representing the federal states, had unexpectedly threatened to form a two-thirds majority to thwart government plans to cut photovoltaic incentives. More

California schools recognized for contributions to solar energy

Two Manhattan Beach, Calif., schools were recently nominated for the new federal Green Ribbon Schools Award. The Environmental Charter High School and Grand View Elementary School are the two Manhattan Beach schools nominated for the award, which recognizes schools for their green energy production in the state. The two schools join Longfellow Elementary School in Long Beach, Calif., and the Athenian School in Danville, Calif., as the learning institutions nominated for the award. More

Arizona's solar energy ranked 3rd nationally

VideoBriefGov. Jan Brewer announced the Grand Canyon state is ranked third in the nation in solar system installation. The ranking comes from the 2011 U.S. Solar Market Insight Report from the Solar Energy Industries Association. According to the report, between 2010 and 2011 Arizona's energy production jumped from 63 to 273 megawatts, which is a 333 percent rate of growth. The state now trails only California and New Jersey. More
