Report: Solar scores big gains in electricity generation

Anonymous donor offers between $50,000 and $70,000 for school solar energy initiatives

Yet another anonymous donor has come forward and wants to help Michigan's Manchester Community Schools develop solar energy projects. Superintendent Cherie Vannatter announced at the district's April 15 board of education meeting that an anonymous donor has offered to pay between $50,000 and $70,000 for solar energy projects in the district.

Lincoln Financial Field generating energy with solar panels, turbines

The stats are electrifying: On a recent sunny day, this bulky unit churned out 21,033.7 kilowatt hours, nearly enough to power two average homes for a year. The long-awaited solar panels and wind turbines at Lincoln Financial Field, the home of the Philadelphia Eagles, are up and running. More than 11,000 panels have been positioned atop the roof, over some of the parking spots and armoring the side of the building along Interstate 95.

Solar-powered home marks 4th local Habitat for Humanity dwelling

New England's first solar-powered Habitat for Humanity home will be completed in Oakland, Maine, this season. It will be the fourth home built since 2001 by the Waterville area chapter of Habitat for Humanity, an organization that leverages donations and connections to build homes for those who wouldn't qualify for a traditional mortgage.

IKEA installs 2.67-megawatt solar array in Maryland

Home furnishings retailer IKEA has inaugurated a 2.67-megawatt rooftop photovoltaic array at its distribution center in Perryville, Md. The 768,972 square-foot PV array, built with 18,576 panels, is currently the state's largest rooftop system, according to the company.

Colorado bill moves on to up renewable energy usage for co-ops

The Colorado Senate — over the strong objections of rural Republican lawmakers — passed a bill increasing the amount of renewable energy that rural electricity cooperatives must use. The bill, SB 252, requires that 25 percent of the co-ops' electricity come from renewable sources by 2020, up from the 10 percent standard set in 2007.

Solar energy takes over the grid

Solar energy accounted for 100 percent of new power generation built in the U.S. in the month of March. Over 44 megawatts of solar capacity from seven projects in California, Nevada, New Jersey, Hawaii, Arizona and North Carolina were added to the grid last month, and that doesn't include distributed solar, which goes on commercial and residential rooftops. Those sources likely added dozens of megawatts to the grid, as well.

METI: Japan adds 1,394 megawatts of clean energy capacity
Bloomberg Businessweek
Japan, the world's biggest importer of liquefied natural gas, added 1,394 megawatts of clean energy capacity — most of it solar — between April last year and the end of January, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said in a statement.

Michigan city council considers solar power for city roofs
The Eastern Echo
Michigan's Ypsilanti City Council was asked for a policy commitment in favor of solar power for the city. Virginia Shannon, the state associate at Environment Michigan, presented the request to the council. Ypsilanti Mayor Paul Schreiber expressed interest in seeing a report from Eastern Michigan University, which Shannon said is currently being created regarding solar technology research, before making the commitment.

Solar energy installations rising slowly in New York village

Residents of Three Village, N.Y., are slowly becoming aware of the benefits of having a solar energy electrical system. Data requested from Long Island Power Authority show the number of solar energy installations in the community rose quickly in 2010 and 2011, and in 2012 still showed an increase over 2009.
