    Antelope Valley Solar Ranch receives 1st federal loan disbursement

    Exelon's 230-megawatt Antelope Valley Solar Ranch One being built in Los Angeles County received the first advance on a federal loan guaranteed by the Energy Department's Loan Programs Office. The disbursement finalized Exelon's ownership of the project, which is being built by First Solar. The project is among one of the largest that's currently under construction. "Construction on the project began last year," said Exelon spokesperson Paul Elsberg. More

    Electric car company Tesla and solar roof installer SolarCity have quietly been making deals that could one day lead to dozens of sales of battery projects, coupled with rooftop solar systems built at both residential and commercial buildings in California. SolarCity confirmed the energy storage plans, and the duo have submitted at least 70 applications for projects to attempt to receive rebates from the California Public Utility Commission's Self-Generation Incentive Program.     Project to map 'every US commercial rooftop' for solar potential

    Satellite imagery company GeoEye has teamed up with Geostellar in a partnership that aims to map and catalog the photovoltaic solar potential of every commercial and residential property in the United States. Under terms of the agreement, GeoEye will supply earth imagery, digital surface models and other mapping data to help Geostellar expand its existing service.     Japan panel head eyes incentive seen boosting solar power

    The head of a Japanese panel suggested that utilities pay 52 cents per kilowatt-hour for solar power supplies in a renewable energy incentive scheme, a rate that could encourage business investors to enter the budding market. Japan will introduce a new feed-in tariff scheme, which was originally aimed to help cut fossil fuel consumption and has become a key policy as Japan tries to reduce its reliance on atomic power after last year's Fukushima disaster.     Panasonic will live broadcast a solar eclipse over Japan from the top of Mount Fuji next month, using batteries that are charged at the base using solar power and then carried up to the peak. The company will use the event to create publicity for its solar panels and rechargeable portable power units. Panasonic said all video cameras, computers and other equipment used for the broadcast will be powered by solar energy. The team will consist of mountain guides and engineers, as well as some participants chosen from the general public. More

    BWI airport parking garage home to new 505 kilowatt solar power array

    A parking garage at BWI airport in Baltimore is home to a new solar power array. The project is a joint venture between BWI Thurgood Marshall International Airport and Pepco Energy Services. The solar energy system was built on a canopy on the top level of the nine-story garage. The system is tied into the airport's electrical distribution system, and power produced by the solar panels will offset power the garage's electricity use. More
