Lincoln Renewable Energy, a developer of U.S. solar and wind power projects, announced the close of a $41 million power sales and project finance deal with Macquarie Energy LLC. As part of the deal, Macquarie Energy will enter into a long-term purchase agreement for power and renewable energy credits from LRE's New Jersey Oak Solar project. Macquarie Energy will also provide construction finance and term debt to the project. LRE will be the long-term owner of the facility. More

Solar power producers want customer access

Green energy advocates are pushing for a change in state law to allow solar power producers to sell electricity directly to homeowners and businesses. Such a change would upend North Carolina's longstanding energy policy, which doesn't let consumers choose their electricity provider. New York City will create solar power plants on top of sealed landfills that could generate power for 50,000 homes, part of a renewed effort to reduce climate-changing carbon gas emissions. The program, announced by Mayor Bloomberg, could cut the reliance on emergency generators that burn petroleum-based fuel on hot days when electricity demand peaks, said Jason Post, a spokesman for the mayor. State grant pays for new panels at nonprofit housing

A nonprofit that operates an affordable-housing complex for senior citizens and the disabled in Salem, Mass., celebrated a new installation of solar panels paid for with a $256,000 state grant. Three rows of ground-mounted panels are expected to generate about 35,000 kilowatt hours a year in electricity for Preservation of Affordable Housing Inc., the owner of Salem Fairweather, a building with 127 apartments. More

Arizona developer Randall Jackson got Chandler City Council zoning approval earlier this month to cover the plot across the street from Chandler-Gilbert Community College with 565 rotating solar panels surrounded by a block wall and shrubbery. According to the zoning application, he will sell the generated power to Salt River Project. But the plan to cover vacant land with solar panels without any direct residential or business user took SRP by surprise and has prompted the utility to change its solar-rebate program and exclude such ventures from financial incentives after May 1. Solar power developer American Capital Energy Inc. said it has won an $85 million contract to install 18.2 megawatts of solar power on Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard. The North Chelmsford, Mass.-based company said it received the contract from the Cape & Vineyard Electric Cooperative. The projects will reuse capped landfills and will be financed by private investors, the company said. More

Fotowatio breaks ground on Webberville solar plant in Texas

A California unit of the Madrid-based solar energy company Fotowatio SL completed financing and began construction on a 30-megawatt photovoltaic project in Texas.
