    S&C Electric, a leading smart grid and energy storage company based out of Chicago, is starting work on a pilot project that will store solar energy using lithium-ion batteries. The project will involve a 75-kilowatt lithium-ion battery system at an eco-home project in an undisclosed location. "The average home uses around 1.5 kilowatts of electricity, so the battery should provide power for around 50 homes in the development," Andrew Jones, managing director for S&C Electric Europe, said.     The Environmental Protection Agency updated its list of top 50 organizations using green energy. Intel continued to top the list by using 2.5 billion kilowatt-hours of green energy annually — it has since 2008. All top 50 organizations, including companies, municipalities, government agencies and other organizations, each used more than 100 million kilowatt-hours of green energy. More

    US DOE boosting 'plug-and-play' solar with SunShot Initiative

    The latest announcement from the U.S. Department of Energy is that it's giving a $5 million boost to the development of "plug-and-play" solar power systems — photovoltaic systems that can be purchased, installed and operational in one day. The $5 million will go to two projects. The DOE is also requesting another $20 million from Congress over the next four years to encourage the development of such technology. More

    The Asian Development Bank will lend India's Reliance Power $103 million to help finance a 100-megawatt concentrating solar power plant that is to be built adjacent to a 40-megawatt solar photovoltaic farm in Rajasthan, India, the ADB announced April 24. Reliance's concentrating solar power project is ADB's first concentrating solar power financing, as well as one of India's largest solar power projects. "This 100-megawatt plant will help meet growing energy demand in India, in a way that avoids emission of harmful greenhouse gases," said Michael Barrow, director in ADB's Private Sector Operations Department.     The Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy introduced new tools for renewable energy project planners. The tools, a series of decision trees, were designed to make it easier for project developers to pursue such projects on roughly 490,000 sites and 15 million acres across the U.S. It's offered partly as an alternative to developing projects on lands maintained by the Bureau of Land Management, which often is more pristine than other lands.     Solar Trust of America LLC, a U.S. company developing what would be the world's largest solar power plant, was approved for new loans in its bankruptcy proceeding as it seeks more time to sell its assets. The company, based in Oakland, Calif., and other U.S. units will receive financing arranged by Mason Capital Management LLC that includes $25 million in working capital loans and $18.3 million in letters of credit, according to an order filed in bankruptcy court.     A California company's plan to start a solar equipment prototyping service is running up against a June deadline to secure a critical funding from the Pacific Gas & Electric Co., which is seeking regulatory approval to use ratepayers' money for the plan. SVTC Technologies has secured a $30 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to start the service, and it's hoping to get $9.9 million from PG&E by June this year in order to claim the federal funding, said Gunter Ziegenbalg, SVTC's president.
