Goldman Unit gets $90.6 million loan guarantee for Colorado solar farm

Cogentrix Energy LLC, a unit of Goldman Sachs Group Inc., received a $90.6 million conditional loan guarantee from the U.S. Energy Department to build a solar plant in Colorado. The 30-megawatt Alamosa Solar Generating Project will use concentrating photovoltaic technology that focuses the sun's rays to increase output, according to a statement from the Energy Department. Constellation to build largest US solar rooftop project in New Jersey

Constellation Energy Group Inc., which agreed to be bought by Exelon Corp., is building the largest U.S. rooftop solar-energy project, at a Toys "R" Us Inc. distribution center in New Jersey. Constellation will use 37,000 solar panels from Energy Conversion Devices Inc. (ENER) for the 5.38-megawatt project, Paramus, New Jersey-based Toys "R" Us said in a statement. More

RTI International, on behalf of the U.S. Department of Labor, has been asked to assist in identifying Solar Energy Systems Engineers to participate in a project that helps accurately describe their occupation. The project needs individuals who have at least five years experience as a practicing or supervising Solar Energy Engineer and are still performing in the occupation. Qualified volunteers are asked to complete questionnaires about the tasks, work context, and knowledge requirements of their occupation. A company of U.S. Marines recently conducted a remarkable three-week patrol through southern Afghanistan, replacing hundreds of pounds of spare batteries in their packs with roll-up solar panels the size of placemats to power their battle gear. By allowing the troops to recharge their radios, GPS devices and other equipment, the green technology freed the Marines of India Company from constant resupply by road and air. And by carrying fewer batteries, they carried more bullets. More

Hawaii's solar energy industry rallied last month to preserve renewable energy tax credits that were targeted for elimination by lawmakers looking for ways shore up the state's shaky fiscal position. A bill (SB 756) that would have ended renewable energy tax credits by 2015 and impose a one-year delay on tax credits claimed in 2012 died when legislators failed to bring it before a conference committee in the last days of the legislative session. Public Service Commission tells Consumers Energy to expand solar program

State regulators are requiring Consumers Energy Co. to expand a solar-energy program as part of a renewable-energy plan for the utility. The Michigan Public Service Commission conditionally approved an amended renewable-energy plan for Jackson-based Consumers but did not go along with the utility's plans to cap its pilot solar program. The Colorado legislature has slashed the price of government red-tape for permitting solar power arrays. The Fair Permit Act (HB-1199) cuts the cost local government agencies can charge customers for permits to install solar electric systems or solar water heaters — in some cases by over 50 percent. The BoDean Company aggregate and asphalt supplier is going 100 percent solar-powered, the first to do so in the world, according to the industry magazine Rock Products. A total of 3,444 solar panels were installed on a restored slope at the quarry. The system as a whole is capable of generating 1.165 megawatts of green energy annually. More

Senator Rob Portman of Ohio is scheduled to help The Cincinnati Zoo celebrate the installation of a solar panel canopy that will provide power for the facility. Workers installed the $11 million canopy over a parking area that will provide shade for 800 of 1,000 parking spots available at the zoo's main entrance. More

SunRun, a residential solar leasing company, announced that it secured $200 million in renewable energy tax equity financing from U.S. Bancorp. That financing commitment is the largest tax equity commitment to date to any renewable energy company like SunRun, according to SunRun spokeswoman Susan Wise. More
