US, India glimpse a bright future together in solar power
The Washington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
There are few places in the world where the opportunity for solar power is more blindingly obvious than India. There are also few industries where the possibility of collaboration between India and the United States is more tantalizing. But although India's solar industry is finally taking off, enormous hurdles must be overcome before it can make a meaningful contribution to the country's rapidly growing power needs, experts and business leaders say. Lobby: Solar is Europe's most installed power source
Bloomberg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Solar power became the most-installed energy source in Europe last year for the first time as subsidies drove investment to records, the European Photovoltaic Industry Association said. Installations of photovoltaic panels in the region surged 63 percent to 21.9 gigawatts, surpassing all new wind and gas-fired power capacity combined, a report shows. Wind and gas plants connected in 2011 amounted to about 9.5 gigawatts each, it said. More

    Study: Solar energy not oversubsidized
Desert Dispatch    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A study by the University of Tennessee's Baker Center for Public Policy says that solar energy is subsidized at about the same rate as other energy sources. The industry "is consistent with the less-than-smooth paths that many American industries have traveled as they entered the mainstream of commerce," the study said. It added that solar power is in a stage "where government incentives can be most critical in helping new energy technologies become significant sources of energy production." More

CleanEnergyAuthority.com    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It's in Maryland — Washington County — to be exact. The county in Maryland's panhandle is in final discussions with EPG Solar to likely become the first county government that's powered entirely by solar power. "It's pretty much all negotiated. At this point really it's just about the signatures," said Michael Borkowski, an EPG managing partner. More

Branchburg, NJ, hopes solar panels will save community some cash
The Star-Ledger    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Branchburg, N.J., officials hope that by turning the township's power sources green, they'll see some green. The township is putting the finishing touches on a solar panel array designed to power almost all of the Branchburg municipal building on Route 202 — a project officials say could drop energy costs by at least $5,000 a month. That's roughly 60 percent of the building's energy costs, Branchburg Administrator Gregory Bonin said. More

Bureau of Land Management plans to trim solar plant's impact on environment
The Desert Sun    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
At 1,208 acres, the Desert Harvest solar project is already the smallest of the large-scale solar plants proposed for public land east of the Coachella Valley in California. But the U.S. Bureau of Land Management wants to cut down the 150-megawatt photovoltaic plant by 164 acres, while allowing the project developer enXco to use high-profile racks that would raise the panels 15 feet off the ground. The changes to enXco's original plans for Desert Harvest, which would produce enough power for about 45,000 homes, are part of the BLM's draft environmental impact report on the project that was released last month.
