President Obama to visit Fremont to push solar energy

President Obama plans to visit Fremont to tour the Solyndra solar energy manufacturing facility and speak to workers about jobs and the economy, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters. Reason for the trip: the Department of Energy last year offered Solyndra, Inc. -- which manufactures photovoltaic solar panels -- a $535 million loan guarantee funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to support the construction of a new commercial-scale manufacturing facility. More



Bacteria may aid solar energy technology

Solar electric installations reach record highs in Minnesota

A record number of solar photovoltaic systems were installed in Minnesota in 2009, according to the Minnesota Utility Solar Integration Rankings compiled by the Minnesota Department of Commerce's Office of Energy Security. The rankings, designed to highlight utilities in Minnesota that are leading the integration of solar electricity into the grid, found a record 71 new solar electric systems with a combined record capacity of 384 kilowatts were installed in 2009. BrightSource Energy raises funds for big solar plants

BrightSource Energy has raised $150 million to fund the construction of large solar power plants in the southwest U.S. over the next six years, the company said. New investors in the Oakland, Calif.-based company include the California State Teachers Retirement System and Alstom, the France-based conglomerate that develops power generation and rail projects.
