Obama touts alternative energy in Fremont, Calif.
CBS5    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
President Barack Obama pointed to the "heartbreaking" oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico as underscoring the urgent need for alternative fuel sources to feed U.S. energy needs during a visit to a Bay Area solar energy plant May 26. Obama called Solyndra Inc.'s solar panel manufacturing facility in Fremont and its workers "a testament to American ingenuity and dynamism." More

Solar Industry    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Oregon Public Utility Commission has issued rules for a pilot incentive program designed to encourage the use of solar energy. The pilot project will allow customers to receive incentive payments for new solar systems installed after July 1. More

Louisiana lawmakers move on renewable energy bills
CNBC    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As millions of gallons of leaked oil swirl around the Gulf of Mexico and enter Louisiana's delicate coastal wetlands, several bills that would help Louisiana harness more energy from renewable sources are winding through the state Legislature. The measures, if passed, would help Louisiana capture energy from the Mississippi River's currents, make it easier for residents to install solar panels on their homes and allow cities and parishes to trade in their fleets of gas guzzlers for more efficient vehicles. SunEdison venture could lead to $1.5 billion in solar energy projects
The Washington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
SunEdison, a Beltsville, Md., firm that develops solar energy plants around the world, is teaming with one of the industry's largest private-equity companies in a joint venture that could generate up to $1.5 billion in new projects. The deal with First Reserve comes as the price of manufacturing photovoltaic cells has dropped sharply in the past 18 months, making new projects much more affordable. More

Florida takes giant step with huge solar-power plant
Orlando Sentinel    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Florida Power & Light Co.'s newest solar-energy plant will have enough mirrors to cover 80 football fields. But those mirrors will focus sunlight onto surfaces that add up to slightly less than the area of a single football field. That concentration of solar power will generate temperatures of more than 700 degrees -- hot enough to make electricity for 11,000 homes. More

Environmentalists praise Illinois solar energy bill
Bloomberg Businessweek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Environmentalists are beaming over legislation meant to encourage the use of solar energy in Illinois. The measure would set annual targets for the amount of electricity that power companies must produce through solar energy. Advocates say the annual targets would help companies gradually reach a requirement that's already state law -- by 2015, 6 percent of renewable energy must come from solar power. More

India adds record renewables capacity in past year
businessGreen    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
India added 2.33GW of grid-connected renewable power capacity during the year to the end of March, according to a statement from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, more than doubling the rate at which it installed renewables capacity during the previous year. The record performance takes the country's total installed capacity of renewable energy to 16.8GW, far outstripping the performance of many industrialized nations including the U.K., France, Japan and Canada. Solar panels can attract breeding water insects, but scientists propose simple fix
Solar Glazing    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Solar power might be nature's most plentiful and benign source of energy, but shiny black solar cells can lure water insects away from critical breeding areas, a Michigan State University scientist and colleagues warn. Applying white grids or other methods to break up the polarized reflection of light, however, makes mayflies and other aquatic insects far less likely to deposit eggs on the panels thinking that they are water, the group discovered.
