The National Renewable Energy Laboratory just completed a study that says that more wind and solar power can be added to the current grid with less infrastructure cost than previously thought. Increasing the amount of solar and wind power to 35 percent of the grid's electricity by 2017 will need some changes in standard operating procedures but not the huge costs initially anticipated. More

France's Total invests in US solar power startup

French oil and gas company Total SA said it has increased its investment in solar energy by acquiring an ownership stake in a U.S. startup firm AE Polysilicon Corp. Total has a 25.4 percent stake in AE Polysilicon, which makes technology to produce polysilicon used in photovoltaic panels that convert energy from the sun. More

Solar Power gets $32 million for manufacturing, solar farm

Solar Power Inc. has been allocated an additional $32 million in tax-exempt bonds that will enable the Roseville, Calif., company to finance the renovation of a local manufacturing plant and a 16-megawatt solar farm in north Sacramento County. The funds -- approved by the California Debt Limit Allocation Committee -- brings the company's total recovery zone facility bond allocation to $56.7 million. More

Pennsylvania hands out 1,000th rebate under $100 million solar program

The State of Pennsylvania has given out its 1,000th rebate under its PA Sunshine Solar Rebate Program just over a year after the scheme began. The 1,000th check was presented by the state's Department of Environmental Protection Secretary John Hanger to Montgomery County resident Sally Kauffman. More

Times Square gains first 100% solar-powered billboard

Digital office equipment provider Ricoh Americas Corporation has completed the first 100 percent solar-powered electronic billboard on New York's Times Square. The 6,000 square foot Ricoh Eco Board at the corner of 7th Avenue and 42nd Street is powered solely by 62 solar panels and 24 thin-film PV modules. More

"I thought, 'How could you make a solar boat and a (wind-powered) sailing boat that's also seaworthy?'" Ohio is close to reforming its property tax laws to dramatically cut the costs of developing renewable energy projects in the state. A vote by the state's House of Representatives -- and a final clearance from the Senate -- passed a bill that is now expected to become law before the summer recess. More

High schooler launches solar panel installation in Thousand Oaks

Apparently undistracted by normal teenage concerns, Westlake High School senior Adam Raudonis has helped set up a 6.3-kilowatt solar installation at his school. The 18-year old, who raised $5,900 through grants, fundraisers, coin drives, Earth Day activities and recycling, will reveal the system at the Thousand Oaks campus. The panels will help offset 270,000 pounds of carbon dioxide over their 25-year lifespan while saving the school $40,000. More
