SEIA: US solar grew 85 percent in Q1
Bloomberg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Developers installed 85 percent more solar panels in the U.S. in the first quarter than a year earlier, led by strong growth in commercial projects and demand in New Jersey, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association. Total U.S. installations were 506 megawatts in the quarter and may reach 3,300 megawatts this year, about 11 percent of the 2012 global market. More

Low-cost solar brightens lives in the developing world
National Geographic    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A decade ago, Katherine Lucey oversaw a heavily subsidized $1,500 solar light installation in the rural district of Mpigi in central Uganda. The 60-watt rooftop solar panel system could power three lights in the four-room, off-the-grid house. The family's father wanted the lights in his office, bedroom and main room. But his wife successfully argued instead for a light in the room where she cooked dinner, a light outside for security and a light for her chicken coop. After all, chickens lay more eggs when they have more light. More

NREL helps make solar panels last
CleanTechnica    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
During 30 years on a rooftop, a solar panel gets bombarded by ultraviolet rays, soaked by rain, buffeted by wind and pounded by hail. How well it stands up to that beating is a crucial factor in setting the warranties of solar modules — and in convincing the public that solar energy can be counted on like the sun rising in the east. The U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory plays a crucial role in improving the reliability of the photovoltaic panels that are being installed on rooftops in record numbers. Legislation would give renewable energy investors access to tax advantage
Solar Industry    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Sens. Chris Coons, D-Del., and Jerry Moran, R-Kan., have introduced the Master Limited Partnerships Parity Act, legislation that is designed to level the energy playing field by giving investors in renewable energy projects access to a decades-old tax advantage that is currently available only to investors in fossil fuel-based energy projects. The Solar Energy Industries Association, among other organizations, has endorsed the legislation. More

First Solar's new research platform: Big news for intermolecular
Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Two years ago, it seemed like First Solar could do no wrong. The company could manufacture it's thin film photovoltaic cells at a fraction of the price of traditional crystalline silicon cells. That was then. Now, a supply glut caused by overbuilding and reduced subsidies has dramatically slashed the price of crystalline silicon cells. Bloomberg New Energy Finance forecasts that demand will not catch up with supply until 2014, even in their most optimistic scenario. More

Why solar and natural gas will be central to US energy policy
Greentech Media    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
President Barack Obama's recent talk of an "all-of-the-above" approach to energy is no doubt partially motivated by election year politics. That said, there is an important kernel of truth underlying it: No one approach can solve the nation's future energy needs. While some renewable energy advocates want the industry to be the white knight, the reality is that meeting the U.S.'s energy needs will require fossil fuels and renewables not merely to coexist, but to co-develop. This coexistence is particularly critical for two sectors of the industry: solar and natural gas. More

Renewable energy grows despite financial crisis
Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Renewable energy sources supplied 16.7 percent of global energy consumption in 2011, but the $257 billion of investment in the sector was still 15 percent lower than into fossil power generation, two influential bodies reported. The investments were a 17 percent increase on the previous year and 94 percent higher than in 2007, the year before the beginning of the financial crisis. More

VideoBriefWorkers recently swarmed Francisca Guerva's two-family home in Boston, installing a state-of-the-art array of solar panels. Normally, installing a system of this nature would cost about $30,000. Guerva, however, is paying nothing. She says her neighbors think she has won the lottery. So how did Guerva manage to get this system for nothing up front? The big difference on her house is the panels were leased. More
