    In a move that could boost solar energy use in homes, Google Inc. is creating a $280-million fund to help finance rooftop installations. The Internet search giant, an avid investor in renewable energy technologies, said the deal with SolarCity, a solar panel installation company based in San Mateo, Calif., is the largest green investment it has ever made.     Tucson Electric Power said it ranked sixth in the nation last year for per-capita additions to its solar energy portfolio, according to a report released this month by the Solar Electric Power Association. In a release on June 16, Tucson Electric Power said the industry group's ranking reflects the expansion of TEP's solar power systems as well as the photovoltaic arrays added last year to local homes and businesses. TEP now has nearly 25 megawatts of solar generating capacity, enough to power more than 6,000 Tucson homes. More

    The Kit Carson Rural Electric Cooperative in Taos has signed a power purchase agreement with Standard Solar Inc. for a 1.5-megawatt solar electric generating facility. Under the agreement, Kit Carson will purchase electricity from the utility-scale photovoltaic facility for 25 years. More

    SolarBridge raises $19 million in venture backing

    Austin's SolarBridge Technologies Inc. has raised an additional $19 million in a third investment round to support its push into solar power electronics. The company did not disclose the lead investor for the latest round, but it said that its existing investors, Rho Ventures and Battery Ventures, participated in the funding. More

    Construction should begin within a month on a "waterless" 700-megawatt solar power project in Maricopa County, Ariz., that won a $359 million conditional loan guarantee from the Department of Energy. Energy Secretary Steven Chu said the loan guarantee would cover a significant portion of the estimated half-billion-dollar cost for the first phase of San Diego-based Sempra Generation's Mesquite Solar plant, to be built on old farmland about 40 miles west of Phoenix. Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu called the project by 1366 Technologies Inc. a "game changer" that could slash the price of solar power by cutting the wafers' manufacturing costs in half.     Vineland, NJ, $23.7-million solar-energy facility will create about 120 jobs

    A Monmouth County, N.J., firm said it will build a $23.7-million solar-energy facility that should be operational by the end of September. Officials with NJR Clean Energy Ventures said in a statement that the facility will generate 4.7 megawatts of power that will be sold to the wholesale energy market through the Vineland Municipal Electric Utility, or VMEU.
