US solar panel market will reach $34.5 billion by 2014
Today's Energy Solutions    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article has announced the addition of SBI's new report "U.S. Solar Energy Market World Data, 2nd Edition," to their collection of Solar Power market reports. After its best year ever in 2008, the world solar market struggled to survive a tumultuous 2009. What looked like a yawning drop for the photovoltaic (PV) market in the first half of the year turned into a solid gain in total amount of systems installed on the strength of strong German sales in the fourth quarter. But despite annual worldwide PV installations rising from 5.8 GW in 2008 to 6.6 GW in 2009, the PV market value dropped by 15.8 percent to $17.0 billion due to crashing PV cell and module prices. Survey shows Americans want and will pay for solar power    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
A survey conducted by Applied Materials, Inc. found that two-thirds of Americans would pay more on their bills if their utility company used more renewable energy sources like solar power. This is the second such survey conducted by the supplier of solar panel manufacturing equipment, conducted at the company's request by Ketchum Global Research Network with a sample of 1,000 American adults. Solar power boosted as new loan program grows
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For decades, the push for solar power has stalled not on public support, but on cost. That might be about to change with the launch of a unique tax program that's exciting some industry veterans. Gary Garber is one such veteran. Garber built his first solar panels from scratch back in 1976. They went up on his parents' roof top in nearby Walnut Creek, Calif. Today he runs Sun Light & Power, a 60-employee solar panel installation firm that's been behind some of the San Francisco Bay Area's biggest solar power arrays. More

Tampa, Fla., utility testing pole-mounted solar panels
CoolerPlanet    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Utilities and solar energy companies have been working together in many parts of the country to put unused roof space and abandoned industrial lots to better use by installing photovoltaic panels to generate clean energy. However, telephone poles may be playing a greater role in the coming years when it comes to distributed solar plans that generate large amounts of energy with help from existing structures. This allows companies to avoid the costs and regulatory burdens that come with having to acquire new parcels of land for such projects. More

Solarbuzz reports 9 countries set to exceed 250MW PV market size in 2010

Foreign firms take shine to $70 billion India solar push
The Economic Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The government's drive to ramp up solar capacity may trigger a stampede of firms from Asia, Europe and North America, chasing a share of the $3.5 billion of business up for grabs by 2013 and trampling over smaller domestic players. Arizona's First Solar and China's Suntech Power Holdings are working on plans to enter the market as India commits to an ambitious $70 billion program to build 20GW of solar capacity by 2022, from about 30MW now. Highly efficient solar cells could result from quantum dot research
Nanotechnology & Development News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
New research conducted by chemist Xiaoyang Zhu at the University of Texas at Austin, United States, suggests that conventional solar cell efficiency could be increased from its current limit of 30 percent to more than 60 percent through the use of nanocrystals, or quantum dots. Much of the energy from sunlight hitting a solar cell is lost as heat because it is too high to be turned into usable electricity. More
