The U.S. Department of the Interior has approved a 350-megawatt solar photovoltaic plant to be built on tribal trust land of the Paiute Indian Tribe in Nevada as the first utility-scale solar project to be approved for tribal lands. The K Road Moapa Solar plant will be built in three phases of 100-150 megawatts each, and the project will include a 500-kilovolt transmission line. This is the 31st utility-scale renewable energy project approved by the Department of Interior since 2009, including 17 solar projects. More

Summer Solstice Solar Energy Survey: Consumers around the world think their country has the most solar power installed
CleanTechnica    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Applied Materials puts out an interesting Summer Solstice Solar Energy Survey annually. While it covers a range of topics, one of the most interesting findings this year is that consumers of various countries think their country is the solar leader (when it is not). "Respondents of each country believed their country has installed the greatest number of solar panels. Almost six in 10 Americans say the U.S. has installed the most solar panels, 43 percent of Chinese think it is China and half of India thinks it is their country," Applied Materials writes. More

New solar project makes San Antonio energy goal shine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
An almost 20-megawatt solar installation at the Dos Rios Water Recycling Center has catapulted San Antonio to the No. 1 spot in the state for solar. The city is ahead of the rest of Texas with a total of 34.2 megawatts of installed solar, said CPS Energy spokesman John Moreno. But the utility isn't stopping there. Moreno said CPS has a goal of reaching 1,500 megawatts of renewable energy by 2020. That's a bold goal, but one CPS is looking to meet early. More

Bloomberg makes news with solar installation    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Bloomberg, known for reporting the news, made headlines of its own recently when the company installed 1.8 megawatts of solar at its Skillman, N.J., campus. The ground-mounted SunPower system will meet about 58 percent of the energy demand at Bloomberg's 100,000-square-foot main building, according to a release from SunPower. Bloomberg is an international news agency focused on financial and market updates and analytics. The company has grown internationally, and its New Jersey campus is a hub. More

Chinese silicon-makers said to seek duties on US rivals
Bloomberg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Chinese polysilicon-makers are pressing their government to impose duties on U.S. imports, a move to drive up prices for competing supplies of the material used in solar panels, four people familiar with the issue said. Potentially escalating a trade dispute between the world's biggest economies, GCL-Poly Energy Holdings Ltd., the largest supplier of polysilicon, along with Daqo New Energy Corp. and other producers presented data to the Ministry of Commerce, according to the people, who declined to be identified because the cases are private. The ministry hasn't accepted the cases, a step needed for the producers to file anti-dumping complaints seeking the punitive import taxes, the people said. More

First Solar resumes work at California project
Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
First Solar Inc. said it would restart construction at two California solar power projects after it secured approval from the public works department of Los Angeles, pushing up its shares as much as 13 percent. Installation of panels at the company's 230-megawatt Antelope Valley Solar Ranch One project and at the 66-megawatt Alpine, Calif., power plant was delayed as the county had sought information regarding electrical certifications, said Alan Bernheimer, public relations director at First Solar. A hybrid approach to solar power
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As written by Matthew L. Wald, "When photovoltaic cells make electricity from sunlight, they collect a lot of heat along the way. And they don't work as well warm as they do cold. Four years ago, I wrote about a hybrid system that was intended both to make electricity and gather usable heat on residential rooftops. That company, now called Echo Solar, is offering its product around the country. But the market for such hybrids goes beyond homes, especially if the second product is hot water, which can make steam and then electricity." More

IKEA proposes 2 of the largest US solar panel installations on record
Ecopreneurist    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
IKEA already counts itself as the world's largest retailer of home furnishings and, with a recent announcement, looks to become one of the largest solar energy producers and consumers in the U.S. The company has long marketed itself as an eco-friendly alternative to many other "big box" stores, and it has spent the last several years deploying solar energy panels to the rooftops of its stores and distribution centers. With two new solar panel installations, announced in early June, the company will increase its solar powered U.S. presence to 89 percent. More

Solar energy storage system could bring new power to residences
Hydrogen Fuel News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Researchers from the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research in Stuttgart, Germany, have developed a new energy storage system that could make residential solar power more viable. The storage technology comes from scientists working on the Sol-Ion research project, a collaborative effort between France and Germany. Solar energy in both countries has begun growing in prominence despite some turbulence generated by internal and international politics. As demand for new energy grows amongst consumers, both countries have felt the need to address the issues inherent to solar energy storage. More

New York hospital unveils solar project
Albany Times Union    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When warm blood, cleansed of impurities, flows through machines and back into the bodies of people getting dialysis at Glens Falls Hospital in Glen Falls, N.Y., some of that warmth now comes from the sun rather than the burning of natural gas. The hospital recently unveiled rooftop solar thermal panels at its Renal Dialysis Center, becoming the first hospital in the region to run kidney dialysis partially on solar energy. "This innovation at its purest ... will also help us save a few bucks," said David Kruczlnicki, hospital president and CEO. The $32,500 system was partly paid for by a $25,000 federal stimulus grant from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. More
