SEIA Solar Update

Solar grows in popularity nationwide
CoolerPlanet    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Those who are thinking about installing a solar power system aren't alone. The growth of solar installations in the U.S. has been nothing short of meteoric. According to data from the American Solar Energy Society, the number of residential solar power installations in the country grew by 40 percent last year. That is even more impressive in light of the tepid economic conditions that prevailed in 2009, when millions of jobs were lost and gross domestic product contracted by 2.4 percent. More

Solar-power industry hits magic number
CNBC    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
While some investors feel they're still waiting for the sun to rise on the solar energy industry, it's already high noon for some parts of the sector. In some places in the U.S., solar photovoltaic, PV, technology—the iconic glass panels being deployed on home and business rooftops—already allows users to beat what their local utility charges for electricity generated from coal-fired power plants. Pennsylvania's Pocono Raceway, known to NASCAR fans as the "Tricky Triangle" for its unusual layout, is now home to a gigantic 40,000 panel solar power installation. The new solar array broke ground last year and just went online this week. It is expected to generate about 72 million kilowatt hours of clean power over a 20-year lifespan, and it is believed to be the largest solar installation at a sports facility in the world. More

California state senate campaign heats up over solar power
The Californian    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on
LinkedinE-mail article
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid offered a narrowly focused energy bill for debate that left solar power advocates on the sidelines. The issue, however, remains a hot topic in California's competitive Senate race. Sen. Barbara Boxer and her Republican challenger, Carly Fiorina, say they support expansion of California's solar and wind energy industry and the jobs it would create, but they offer sharply contrasting views on how to get there. National review: A call for energy realism
NPR    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In the summer of 2008, at a time of widespread anger over historically high oil prices, Al Gore challenged his countrymen "to commit to producing 100 percent of our electricity from renewable energy and truly clean carbon-free sources within ten years." This wildly ambitious goal recalled Richard Nixon's proclamation, issued amid the 1973 global oil shock, that the United States would aim to become fully energy independent by 1980. More
