SunPower, Citi create $105 million solar leasing fund for homeowners

SunPower Corp. and Citi announced a new $105 million fund for residential solar leasing projects. Citi is contributing $80 million to the fund. SunPower, which makes solar panels and builds systems, will use the fund to extend its 20-year SunPower Lease program to customers in eight states, expanding the financing options available to homeowners interested in solar power systems.

NABCEP invites owners and senior management personnel of residential and light commercial PV Installation companies to offer their views on the proposed Company Accreditation program that it has been
working on. Respondents will be afforded an opportunity to offer general comments on the accreditation program proposal. The accreditation program criteria was developed through a collaborative process involving a committee of business owners and senior managers. The intent of the survey is to validate the work of the committee and gather input that will enable them to review the markets' response to their efforts and further fine tune the criteria to meet the needs of the PV installation

Department of Energy invests $50 million in solar panel manufacturing

The U.S. Department of Energy announced that it is investing $50 million in the SUNPATH program, which is designed to promote solar panel manufacturing in the United States. The United States manufactured only 7 percent of the world's solar panels last year, according to the Energy Department. That's down from 27 percent in 2000 and 43 percent in 1995.

The sun's energy will replace natural gas as the fuel for drawing more oil from the ground in Oman.
GlassPoint Solar announced that it has signed a deal to install a 7-megawatt solar power system for Petroleum Development Oman to aid oil extraction. The solar system, which is essentially a glass house with solar concentrators, will generate the steam needed to pump oil from existing fields.

Oregon was recently recognized as the nation's leader for solar manufacturing in a report by the Solar Energy Industries Association. According to the executive director of Oregon's SEIA chapter, Glenn Montgomery, the success of manufacturing in Oregon can be attributed to panel manufacturers SolarWorld and Sanyo.

United States Energy Secretary Steven Chu has announced that the Department of Energy has finalized a $967 million loan guarantee to Agua Caliente Solar, LLC, which will help fund the construction
of the Agua Caliente Solar project, a 290-megawatt photovoltaic solar generating facility in Yuma County, Ariz., that will utilize thin film solar panels manufactured by First Solar, Inc. The project sponsor, NRG Solar LLC, estimates the photovoltaic generation facility will fund approximately 400 construction jobs and 10 full time operating jobs, and when completed will be one of the largest plants of its kind in the world.

General Electric Co. (GE) bought a minority stake in the California-based solar company eSolar this week. As a result of the deal, Paul Browning, President and CEO of Thermal Products for GE Energy, will join eSolar's Board of Directors. ESolar already had a licensing agreement with GE Energy, which granted it exclusive worldwide rights to eSolar's modular technology for its Integrated Solar Combined Cycle
(ISCC) power plant solution. This solution, when combined with GE's own "FlexEfficiency" 50 Combined Cycle Power Plant technology, is able to deliver fuel efficiencies over 70 percent.
