New inexpensive solar cell design
ScienceDaily    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
One of the most promising technologies for making inexpensive but reasonably efficient solar photovoltaic cells just got much cheaper. Scientists at the University of Toronto in Canada have shown that inexpensive nickel can work just as well as gold for one of the critical electrical contacts that gather the electrical current produced by their colloidal quantum dot solar cells. Researchers claim new solar energy conversion process
Energy Efficiency News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Researchers from Stanford University in the U.S. claim to have found a new solar energy conversion process that could be twice as efficient as current methods. The process, called photon enhanced thermionic emission or PETE, improves the conversion of solar energy to electricity by harvesting the waste heat generated by the process. More

Solar industry pleads Obama to help restore loan guarantees
The Hill    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Solar industry officials are pleading with President Obama to restore billions of dollars in renewable energy loan guarantees that Congress is at least temporarily cutting to pay for emergency education and Medicaid help to states and other policy priorities. The loss of these loan guarantee funds could help "send solar development into a tailspin that will be difficult to reverse," according to a letter to Obama sent from Rhone Resch, president and CEO of the Solar Energy Industries Association. Solar plant set for San Luis Valley, Colo.
The Denver Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A Goldman Sachs-owned power company plans to build a 30-megawatt solar plant in the San Luis Valley, Colo., with Xcel Energy purchasing the power, the firms said. Charlotte, N.C.-based Cogentrix Energy LLC, a Goldman subsidiary, said its concentrated photovoltaic solar array will be the biggest power plant of its kind in the world once completed by the second quarter of 2012. The 225-acre array north of Alamosa will produce enough power for 6,500 homes using a technology that is more efficient and cost-effective than traditional solar cells, the company said. More

Solar power key to a new green renaissance
American Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The uses for solar energy are becoming more and more apparent as demonstrated by the recent introductions of solar powered mobile phones in Kenya and India. Both countries have large areas where electricity is not available through a grid tied system. Small solar panels and battery systems offer a cleaner energy solution in rural areas where kerosene is often used. More
