US solar PV exports, trade surplus at record levels in 2010

2010 was a record-setting year for the U.S. solar PV manufacturing industry, with U.S. solar PV exports exceeding imports by $1.9 billion globally. Solar PV is one of the few areas where the U.S. actually has a trade surplus with China, according to a report from GT Research and the Solar Energy Industry Association (SEIA) released recently. Imperial Valley solar project receives federal transmission line approval

A solar project west of Calexico will now be able to connect with the California energy grid via a transmission line on public land. The Department of Interior has approved a transmission line for the 250-megawatt Imperial Solar Energy Center West project. The project is anticipated to generate enough energy to power 75,000 homes, up to 285 jobs and $5 million in local sales tax. More

US Navy contracts for solar power

The US Department of Energy (DoE) finalised an $852 million loan guarantee for NextEra Energy Resources' Genesis Solar project, which will increase the nation's concentrating solar power capacity by about 50 percent. Japan solar shipments may jump 10-fold, industry group says

Japanese domestic shipments of solar panels may increase by as much as 10 times in "a fairly short period" after the government approved renewable energy subsidies, a solar industry group's chairman said. "Legislation passed today will secure purchase of power generated by solar panels for a long time period," Mikio Katayama, chairman of the Japan Photovoltaic Energy Association, told reporters in Tokyo today. "That will help a rapid expansion of industry-use and utility-use solar systems." More

Energy conversion surges on plans to make solar roofing, tents

Energy Conversion Devices Inc. (ENER), a maker of flexible solar panels, rose the most in more than three years after announcing plans to adapt its products for consumer and military applications. Energy Conversion rose 13 cents, or 20 percent, to 79 cents at of 12:36 p.m. in NASDAQ Stock Market trading. Earlier it climbed 24 cents, the biggest intra-day gain since May 2008. The share has dropped 83 percent this year. More

Germany-Greece in talks over massive solar project

Greece is looking to the sun for a plan that will help it emerge from its deep economic troubles, and solar giant and EU powerhouse Germany may be the beneficiary. According to a report Saturday in Greek daily newspaper Ta Nea, a $29 billion project (€20 billion) could create as many as 60,000 positions in jobs-starved Greece by harvesting its abundant sunshine and shipping it to Germany, which has committed itself to moving rapidly away from nuclear power following Japan’s earthquake and nuclear crisis.
