Officials: Solar power can aid strained Texas grid
The Texas Tribune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Solar power can play a role in aiding Texas' strained electric grid, industry officials and regulators said recently at a meeting devoted to solar power in San Antonio. "Solar will help ERCOT, will help in our resource adequacy challenge," Public Utility Commissioner Rolando Pablos of San Antonio said at the conference, which was convened by the nonprofit Solar San Antonio. He was referring to the peak-time pressures on the Texas power grid, when power demand threatens to exceed supply. More

Energy: A proxy fight over government's role
NationalJournal Daily    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Solyndra, Keystone, the war on coal — energy issues have taken a starring role on the 2012 campaign trail. Here's why: Both President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are using the debate over coal, drilling and renewable energy as a proxy for their bigger fight about the economy, the budget and the very role of government. Romney, who as governor of Massachusetts endorsed programs to address climate change and boost renewable energy — and once even accused a coal plant of killing people — now embraces a fossil-fuel-friendly platform that includes expanding offshore drilling, rolling back clean-air regulations and waffling on whether humans cause global warming. GreenSpace: Take another look at solar
Philadelphia Inquirer    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Not long ago, Gov. Chris Christie and New Jersey environmental groups wound up on the same side of an issue. Some of the groups actually praised the governor they are so frequently confronting. Hold the gasps. The rest of New Jersey residents can cheer as well, because it benefits them. The state took action that will make solar power somewhat more affordable. So if you're a resident who has been mulling the idea, now is the time to re-mull. More

Work begins on $30 million solar project at VW
Chattanooga Times Free Press    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When Volkswagen turns on its solar park late this year, the site will generate enough electricity to power about 1,200 Chattanooga, Tenn., homes, according to the automaker. But VW will use the power to help run its factory in Chattanooga and produce 12.5 percent of its energy needs, officials said as workers installed the first of 33,600 solar panels. More

After decades of preaching the power of the Son (Jesus), the Modesto Church of the Brethren in Modesto, Calif., is harnessing an additional kind of power — energy from the sun. The west Modesto church, long known for its emphasis on social justice and environmental issues, installed a solar system to provide 100 percent of its electricity, with an excess amount helping to pay for the program. "It's a great project," said Al Wiley, an 85-year-old longtime member who helped build the church's Woodland Avenue facility in 1986. More
