U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced that the Department of Energy's Sandia National Laboratories is investing $8.5 million for four projects that have reached Stage III of the Solar Energy Grid Integration Systems program. These investments will be matched more than one-to-one by the SEGIS contractors to support more than $20 million in total projects. More

The California Public Utilities Commission has approved a San Diego Gas & Electric solar power initiative that provides for 100MW of photovoltaic solar energy. Under the initiative, 26MW of utility-owned generation would be slated for construction on existing San Diego Gas & Electric property, with the remaining 74MW to be purchased from independent power producers, the company said. Study suggests Mountain West as solar hub

A study from the nonpartisan Brookings Institute in Washington suggests that the United States' Mountain West could develop a series of hubs for solar installation, research and innovation. Citing the presence of knowledge and industrial hubs in the states of Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, New Mexico, Utah and Nevada, Brookings recommended investment and partnership with the federal government. East Drumore Township solar farm grows to $65 million

The solar farm approved by East Drumore Township, Penn., supervisors will be the largest on the East Coast, according to Governor Ed Rendell, who announced a $1 million grant to make the project possible. The project, which includes 4,500 solar panels erected on 78 acres of the farm of Gerald and Linda Kreider at Deaver Road and Route 272, will cost $65 million and produce 15 megawatts of electricity for PPL.
