    Chain stores said to lead firms in use of sun power

    Led by the likes of Walmart, Costco and Kohl's, commercial installations of solar power have increased sharply in recent months. More than 3,600 nonresidential systems were activated in the first half of 2012, bringing the number of individual solar electric systems to 24,000, the report said. Whether driven by brand identity or cost concerns, almost half of the top 20 commercial solar customers are major retailers like Bed Bath & Beyond and Staples. More

    The U.S. is on pace to install as much solar power this year as it did in this century's entire first decade: at least 2,500 megawatts, the equivalent of more than two nuclear-power plants. The U.S. added about 742 megawatts of solar capacity in the second quarter, or enough to power about 150,000 homes, the Solar Energy Industries Association said in a report. More

    U.S. solar installations jumped 116 percent in the second quarter from a year ago thanks to the completion of more than 20 big projects for utilities, according to a recent industry report. The quarter was the largest ever for utility installations, which represented 447 megawatts of the 742 megawatt total. More

    Zoo adds solar panels for charging stations, grid support

    The San Diego Zoo will get solar panels to provide juice to five electric vehicle charging stations and shade for vehicles, zoo officials and members of Smart City San Diego said. The panels, expected to provide about 90 kilowatts, will be mounted on 10 canopies in the southeastern section of the parking lot, and any excess electricity will be sold into the region's power grid. The canopies will provide shaded parking for about 50 vehicles. More

    First Solar wins 25-megawatt supply contract from Green Infra

    First Solar Corp., the largest maker of thin-film photovoltaic panels, won a contract to supply 25 megawatts for a project that Green Infra Ltd. is developing in India. Timing for the supplying of the modules and terms weren't disclosed by First Solar in a website statement. Green Infra hired Germany's Juwi Holding AG to design and build the solar power plant. More

    Eaton, Tangent Energy partner for solar projects in US

    Eaton and Tangent Energy Solutions will jointly install solar projects at Eaton's facilities in Pennsylvania. A 1.3-megawatt ground mount solar array will be installed at Eaton's Beaver, Pa., facility, and a 200-kilowatt rooftop array will be installed at Eaton's facility in Coraopolis, Pa., which will together generate 1.76 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity. Tangent will provide on-site solar generation assets for the project and monitor and maintain the facilities over their life cycle. More

    Los Angeles is picking up the pace on distributed solar power installation, with a record 22 megawatts of capacity going atop homes and businesses in the recently concluded 2011-2012 fiscal year, according to the city's municipal utility.     A new initiative is being launched by micro-inverter pioneer Enphase Energy to boost the use of its technology in commercial photovoltaic projects. The new program includes cash rewards for installers undertaking commercial-scale photovoltaic projects. Enphase said that it had expanded its Commercial Solution program to add a limitless features list including cash rewards.     Korea Midland joins Thai project to build solar power plant

    Korea Midland Power Corp. joined a Thai renewable energy project to build an eight-megawatt solar power plant in the southeast Asian country, according to the unit of Korea's monopoly power distributor. Korea Midland signed a contract with Toyo-Thai Corp., a Thai construction company, and Siam Steel Grating Group, a Thai utility equipment maker, to build the solar farm in Ang Thong, Thailand. More
