SolarCity gets $1 billion federal housing contract

The federal government tapped SolarCity for the largest residential solar project in history, a $1 billion effort to install panels at 124 U.S. military bases during the next five years. SolarCity will place solar systems on as many as 160,000 military housing buildings, base warehouses and administrative buildings. The first installations, at Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii, are already under way. More

The laws of supply and demand are actively at work in the solar industry with two direct effects: the death of some solar panel providers and a boost in the number of solar panels installed in the U.S. Research company Solarbuzz reported that rapidly falling solar panel prices this year contributed to a sharp increase in planned non-residential solar projects. Two months ago, the pipeline of projects was 17 gigawatts' worth of solar capacity; it now stands at 24 gigawatts. More

Samsung SDI sees $70 billion global solar cell market by 2020

South Korea's Samsung SDI Co. Ltd. said it expects the global solar cell market to be worth $70 billion by 2020, more than double last year's $30 billion, with falling prices and government support expected to drive demand globally. Choi Chang-sik, executive vice-president of the company's solar energy division, told Reuters in an interview that a growing aversion to nuclear power after the radiation crisis in Japan and rising oil prices would lift demand for solar energy. More



Trina Solar sets solar power world record with new 'Honey' PV module

Trina Solar has set what looks to be a new world record for electricity produced by a multicrystalline solar PV module. A 156 x 156 millimeter, 60-cell module produced a peak 274 watts of electrical power in laboratory testing, a result confirmed by TUV Rhineland. More

'Successful' testing for North America's largest solar dish

Phoenix-based Southwest Solar Technologies Inc. has reported the successful on-sun testing and proof of concept of a highly advanced solar-turbine power system. The full-scale prototype test was the first operational validation of the integrated system, which uses a large parabolic solar dish with mirrors that concentrates the sun's energy to power an air-based open cycle turbine that produces electricity.
