California firm completes North America's largest solar rooftop

Industrial and commercial contractor Oltmans Construction Co. has completed installation of the largest rooftop solar facility in North America. The 8.6-megawatt system covers 1.2 million square feet of roof space on a warehouse in Rialto, Calif. More

Solar-panel imports from China said to face US trade complaint

Solar manufacturers, including a unit of SolarWorld AG, are preparing a U.S. trade complaint against China, as they seek to counter low-cost and subsidized imports, according to people familiar with the matter. The case, which would be filed at the Department of Commerce and the U.S. International Trade Commission in Washington, would be one of the largest targeting China, with political implications as both nations race to develop clean-energy technologies. More

DOE awards $1.1 billion in new solar loan guarantees

Despite the recent collapse of solar manufacturer Solyndra, the U.S. Department of Energy awarded loan guarantees totaling $1.074 billion to two solar companies developing power plants - one in Nevada and the other near Phoenix. The announcement comes amid GOP calls in Congress to investigate the $535 million loan guarantee to California-based Solyndra, which declared bankruptcy earlier this month. More

A recent poll by two polling companies, one Democrat, one Republican, found that twice as many U.S. citizens favor solar and clean energy than those who don't. That's despite the recent Solyndra bankruptcy filing, which could cost taxpayers up to $535 million through the Department of Energy's Loan Programs Office. More

First Solar to build 130-megawatt solar plant in Southern California

The developer of a 130-megawatt solar power project in Southern California has selected Arizona-based First Solar to provide engineering, procurement and construction services for the project. Tenaska Solar Ventures, the solar energy affiliate of Nebraska-based energy company Tenaska, said the appointment was a "major step" in the development of the Imperial Solar Energy Center South project. Chevron Corp., the second-largest U.S. oil company, is extracting crude from a southern California field using steam produced by a 29-megawatt solar-thermal power plant. BrightSource Energy Inc.'s system uses mirrors to focus sunlight on a boiler at Chevron's Coalinga, Calif., enhanced oil recovery project, the solar company said recently in a statement. More
