Solar Power International 2010, the largest business-to-business solar conference and expo in North America, opens its doors to the public on Oct. 13, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. During this free event at the Los Angeles Convention Center, those attending Public Night can browse solar products from more than 1,100 exhibitors, learn about the latest solar energy technology for their home or business, and attend free educational workshops about everything from home installation to climate change. Attendees can also find out about solar jobs at the Job Centers located in both South and West Halls of the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Massive utility-scale solar projects under development in the deserts of California and the Southwest have been in the spotlight in recent months as they win slow approval from state and federal regulators. California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed a law believed to be the first in the country requiring utilities to begin planning for ways to store electricity that could be dispatched as needed. The Akron Metro Regional Transit Authority has installed the largest solar rooftop array in the state of Ohio. The solar rooftop on the bus garages at the authority's headquarters is rated at 488 kilowatts (DC) and is expected to produce about 486,760 kilowatt-hours of electricity a year. More

The Arizona Salt River Project is out of money to pay rebates for household solar-power systems until May because the demand has been so high, the utility announced. The announcement is the latest in a series of abrupt cutoffs in solar rebates from utilities, which are struggling to keep up with demand for the generous incentives that make the power systems more affordable for consumers.
