Solar industry fights for subsidies with jobs and clean energy pitch
Forbes
Share

A U.S. solar industry trade group is lobbying a new offensive to save a popular federal incentive program by releasing a report to show that an one-year extension of the program could create 37,400 more jobs and add nearly 500 megawatts in 2012. The 37,400 jobs will represent a 12 percent boost over the number of new jobs that would otherwise
materialize in 2012 without the federal program, according to the report by EuPD Research. If the program continues through 2013, then the solar industry will add another 51,000 jobs and 1,266 megawatts in 2013. The jobs include manufacturing and installation of solar electric and thermal equipment, as well as those from suppliers to the solar industry.

Texas sun may soon heat up solar power
Fort Worth Star-Telegram
Share

The sun has yet to fully shine on the solar-power industry in Texas. The industry is still tiny, accounting for a fraction of 1 percent of the state's electric power generation.
But industry professionals and advocates of renewable energy say that Texas potentially could become the No. 1 generator of solar power in the U.S. within several years, thanks to its size, wide-open spaces, sunshine and a large, fast-growing population
that will need more electricity.

Solar panel business confronts hodgepodge of
regulations
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
Share

The hodgepodge of regulations - or lack of regulation - that governs use of solar power in Pennsylvania's
2,566 municipalities present a maze of challenges for those in the business.
"We run into regulatory issues all the time, almost every day. Sometimes municipalities are easy about installation. Others are not at all. They really all get to set their own rules. And many building inspectors know nothing about solar power," said Rich Foltz, president of Vox Energy Solutions LLC, a company that installs solar panels.

Solar energy: The quest for cheap
Bloomberg Businessweek
Share

The big number is 50. When companies can produce solar photovoltaic modules for less than 50¢ per watt, solar energy will be able to compete directly with coal. Right now, the cheapest solar cells
are being produced for as little as 70¢ per watt. They are selling for about $1.26 per watt, with prices expected to drop to $1.17 next year. Most anticipate they will hit 50¢ per watt within four or five years.
