1st Public Auction for Solar Energy Rights on Federal Lands Draws No Bids

Federal officials are trying to figure out why the Bureau of Land Management's first-ever auction of public land for solar-energy development failed to attract any bids. According to The Denver Post, no bidders showed up for the first auction for three parcels of land in Colorado's San Luis Valley, even though five solar development companies had expressed interest in the land.

Scientists Use Lego Technology to Make More Efficient Solar Panels

Mimicking the iconic design of Lego blocks, an international team of scientists discovered a better way to harvest the sun's energy. Researchers from Imperial College London and collaborators in Belgium, China and Japan created 22 percent more efficient solar panels by covering their surface with tiny aluminum studs, which are invisible to the naked eye. Under a microscope, however, the grooved surface of one of these panels actually resembles a Lego block.

Solar Companies Rally Against Georgia Utility's 'Solar Tax'

Solar businesses are urging the Georgia Public Service Commission to oppose a new solar tax proposal from utility Georgia Power Co., according to the Georgia Solar Energy Industries Association, which says Georgia Power has petitioned the commission to impose a new charge on customers who install and use solar energy systems at their homes, businesses and farms. The trade association reports that this proposed charge would amount to a 45-55 percent tax on solar energy systems.
