Obama administration announces desert 'solar energy zones'
Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Obama administration recently unveiled its road map for solar energy development, directing large-scale industrial projects to 285,000 acres of desert land in the western U.S. while opening 20 million acres of the Mojave for new development. The Bureau of Land Management's long-awaited "solar energy zones" are intended to make some of the desert's most sensitive landscapes less desirable for solar prospecting by identifying "sweet spots" that have already passed environmental requirements and therefore promise expedited permitting, U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said. Suntech's Arizona plant starts shipping solar panels
Greenbang    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The first of what will eventually be 800,000 solar panels have begun arriving at the construction site of the Mesquite Solar 1 plant in Arizona. Contrary to the lately common image of a moribund U.S. solar industry, many of those panels are being manufactured at Suntech Power Holdings' 117,000-square-foot factory in Goodyear, Ariz. Opened just last October, the factory now employs more than 100 people and is expected to churn out about 50 megawatts (MW) worth of solar panels each year. More

Germany plans to cut solar subsidies, may see year-end rush
Bloomberg Businessweek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Germany, the world's biggest solar panel market, will cut subsidies for photovoltaic power by a record amount next year as the government tries to control the pace of installations and wean the industry off support. Rates under the feed-in-tariff system will be reduced 15 percent from Jan. 1, 2012, after Germany added about 5.2 gigawatts of panels in the year through Sept. 30, the Bundesnetzagentur, the federal grid regulator, said in a statement on its website. Power from panels will earn 17.94 euro cents ($0.25) to 24.43 euro cents a kilowatt-hour. More

CPS starting over on bids for solar power
San Antonio Express-News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
After months of delay, CPS Energy is throwing out all the proposals from companies to build 400 megawatts of solar power here and will begin the process anew because the utility thinks there's a better deal out there. Twelve finalists had been whittled down to two to build what could be one of the largest solar projects in the world, with CPS buying all the power from it. Many expected that a winner would be announced soon. More
