Nonprofit: US solar jobs outpace total economy

The U.S. solar energy industry added jobs at about 5.74 times the rate of the rest of the economy in the 12 months ended in September, according to a report from the Solar Foundation. The industry added 13,872 workers, boosting the solar workforce by 13.2 percent to 119,016 at the end of the period, the Washington-based nonprofit organization said in an emailed statement. The employment growth rate in the total economy was 2.3 percent in the same period, the group said. More

US Navy solar power plant saves $13 million annually

A newly completed power plant at the U.S. Navy Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake in California will supply 30 percent of that facility's power each year, saving $13 million over the next 20 years. The plant was built without taxpayer contribution and is financed through a 20-year solar power purchase agreement (the first federal agency project to have done so). More

Hawaii plans solar panels for public schools

Hawaii's Department of Education is proposing to install solar panels on every public school in Hawaii over the next five years to cut electricity costs and move the state closer to its renewable energy goals. Under the proposal, a vendor would install panels at all 256 Hawaii public schools, and the department would buy solar power from the vendor at a reduced rate. The state would have little to no upfront costs. More

Michigan ballot issue Proposition 3 would expand the state's renewable portfolio standard to 25 percent by 2025 from 10 percent by 2015. It's likely the only renewable portfolio standard expansion in the country up for election this year. Such legislation is important because it creates jobs and stimulates the adoption of renewable energy, like wind, solar, hydro and biomass, across the state. More

Solar panel breaks 'one-third of a sun' efficiency barrier

Embattled photovoltaic solar power manufacturer Amonix announced that it has broken the solar module efficiency record, becoming the first manufacturer to convert more than one-third of incoming light energy into electricity — a goal once branded "one third of a sun" in a U.S. Department of Energy initiative. The Amonix module clocked an efficiency rating of 33.5 percent. More

The Solar Foundation has reported in its third annual National Solar Jobs Census that the U.S. solar industry employs 119,016 people, an increase of 13.2 percent from 2011. The solar job census measured solar industry growth between September 2011 to September 2012. Based on 2012 data collection, The Solar Foundation also revised the 2011 total jobs number from 100,237 to 105,145. More

University of Illinois plans solar energy complex

The University of Illinois plans to build a solar energy complex that could eventually supply about 2 percent of the campus' power. The university says it would have to spend about $15.5 million on the solar energy farm over its first 10 years but would then be able to use energy that would all but cost-free. University trustees are expected to consider the plan at a meeting. More

After about two months of prep work, the first of roughly 178,000 solar panels were installed on the site. It's a milestone the casual observer can see and appreciate, and of course, one that's exciting for Arizona Public Service, the utility that owns and will operate the facility. Spokeswoman Andrea Bereznak said the solar generated power will combine in the grid with electricity produced at the natural gas-fueled Yucca Power Plant northeast of town. More

Puerto Rico begins building large solar park

Construction has started in Puerto Rico on what will soon be the Caribbean's largest solar energy park. The $265 million project is being built in southern Puerto Rico and is expected to generate enough electricity to power more than 13,000 homes in the U.S. territory. The park features 270,000 solar panels and is being financed by CIRO Energy Group and One Planet Caribbean of San Juan, Calif., and San Francisco-based GCL Solar Energy Inc. More

The U.S. Air Force is giving Ascent Solar Technologies Inc. a Small Business Innovation Research Phase II award for flexible, lightweight photovoltaic product development. The Small Business Innovative Research award, subject to finalization, will be for two years and worth as much as $750,000, the company said. More

Las Cruces, NM, parking garage goes green with solar panels

There will be a little shade on the upper deck of the parking garage at Las Cruces City Hall in Las Cruces, N.M. That will mean an estimated 15 percent in electricity cost savings to the city. The City Council unanimously approved a $499,635 contract to Lynco Electric Co. Inc. to install a photovoltaic system on the parking deck immediately east of Las Cruces City Hall. The shade for the deck's upper level will come from solar collectors mounted on top of beams. More
