US clean tech companies get more venture capital
USA Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
article
Despite the recent bankruptcies of two federally-backed energy companies, new reports suggest 90 percent of Americans support the solar industry and venture capitalists are increasing their investments in U.S. clean tech companies. GOP members of Congress have criticized President Obama's Department of Energy for giving loan guarantees to dozens of clean energy companies, two of which — solar panel manufacturer Solyndra and energy storage company Beacon Power Corp. — have sought bankruptcy protection since late August. Solar power advocates challenging proposed 'standby' charge by Dominion Virginia
The Associated Press via The Republic    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Solar power advocates are challenging a residential charge proposed by Dominion Virginia Power that they contend would create disincentives for a renewable energy source that is already lagging in the state. The so-called standby charge would apply to large-scale residential solar customers when their thermal panels are not generating enough electricity, typically at night. More

EPA to study potential for Superfund sites, former landfills to host renewable energy projects
The Associated Press via The Washington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Determining the potential of former landfills, brownfields and Superfund sites around the country to host solar panels and other renewable energy projects is the focus of a new federal assessment. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Colorado plan to spend the next year to 18 months assessing 26 sites. The sites range from a massive open-pit copper mine in southwestern New Mexico to a former lead smelter in Montana and landfills in Arizona, Louisiana and New Jersey. More
