Energy department recognizes 6 leading 'green power' providers

The U.S. Department of Energy recently recognized six organizations for their leadership in advancing "green power" production and distribution during the 10th annual Green Power Leadership Awards in Portland, Ore. Companies and consumers voluntarily buy renewable energy through local suppliers to help reduce the nation's dependence on foreign energy sources and to help expand an industry that has been creating thousands of new jobs each year, the department said. More

Now that the third quarter is over, it is time to collect installation data again. If your company was involved in any PV, solar heating and cooling, or solar pool heating installations during the third quarter (July-September) 2010, please complete the survey; it should take you less than five minutes and you could win an iPad. (One lucky installer from Oregon was selected to receive an iPad for his participation in the Q1/Q2 survey.) All responses will be confidential and results will be reported in aggregate only.

Data will be used to help SEIA and GTM Research track the development of the U.S. solar energy industry and publish quarterly reports.

The Connecticut Clean Energy Fund has launched a revised On-Site Renewable Distributed Generation Program and issued the program's first request for proposals, for which $5.78 million in funding is available. Los Angeles to cut solar rebates in face of high demand

The solar rebates program in Los Angeles has become the latest to become a victim of its own success with plans by the city to reduce rebate rates from Jan. 1, 2011. The LA Department of Water and Power confirmed it will lower residential rebates through 2016 so that it can spread existing budgets between more people interested in switching to solar power. More

Tough times ahead for solar inverter suppliers

Solar inverter capacity will be ramped past 30GW this year, and inverter production may exceed actual demand by more than 2GW in the fourth quarter of this year, according to a new report from IMS Research. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced a $50 million joint solar research program aimed at developing cheaper solar power solutions. "The price of solar technology has come down in recent years but we need to accelerate that trend," Gillard said Sunday. NextEra solar plant gets federal approval

NextEra Energy Inc. won federal approval for a $1 billion-plus, 250-megawatt solar plant in California, the latest in a string of solar-power plants to get the green light in the nation's most populous state. When completed, the plant will be big enough to power at least 75,000 homes, the U.S. Department of the Interior said. More

The device was made by Omron in response to a WHO call for a blood-pressure monitoring device that was accurate, easy to use and solar-powered. More
