KB Home widens solar power offering in California

KB Home says it has made solar power a standard home feature in nearly all of its Southern California developments and plans to include the energy saving systems in homes it builds in the region starting next year. The Los Angeles company said that it now includes solar power as a standard feature in 28 home communities in Southern California. That's up from 10 communities in March. More

World's tallest solar tower set for Arizona

In the western desert state of Arizona, a company called EnviroMission is planning to build a new solar tower, the first of its kind, an ambitious new way to produce energy with heat from the sun. When completed in 2015, the tower, located in La Paz County, will be the tallest building in the world. It is the first of two such towers planned by EnviroMission for Arizona. More

BrightSource strikes world's biggest solar energy storage deal

BrightSource Energy announced that it has struck a deal to add energy storage systems to three massive solar thermal power plants it will build to supply electricity to utility Southern California Edison. Energy storage will allow the plants to operate into the night, meaning that BrightSource can now forgo building one 200-megawatt solar station that previously was needed to meet its obligation to generate 4 million megawatt-hours of electricity annually for the utility. A New Jersey landfill has recently been converted into a solar power generation facility capable of producing over 100 million kilowatt-hours of electricity over its lifetime. The solar project, which employs about 9,000 ENN photovoltaic panels and is located on the south slope of the Edgeboro Landfill in East Brunswick, N.J., was developed and constructed by ENN Solar Energy in partnership with National Energy Renewable Corp., LLC (NERC). There's an impressive collection of new solar arrays at the U.S. Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC) in Twentynine Palms, Calif. — four separate arrays, adding up to 464,000 square feet of photovoltaics. Together they provide 1.5 megawatts of generating capacity, according to a company that worked on the project. Baker Electric Solar said 4,680 SunPower solar panels were installed on two parking areas, an amphitheater and a recreational park at the base. In the blistering hot Southern California desert, these solar canopies not only provide power, but "premium shading" for military personnel. More
