SIM unveils 'Wisdom of Clouds' study
SIM    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Society for Information Management has released a new study, "Wisdom of Clouds," that examines the benefits and offers strategies to consider when provisioning and consuming information through cloud services. The report, released by SIM's Advanced Practices Council of senior IT executives, concludes that while cloud computing does present risks in the form of data security, regulatory and compliance barriers, CIOs cannot afford to wait for every uncertainty to be resolved before examining and pursuing cloud business models. The report finds that cloud strategies also mitigate other kinds of risks, including fluctuating demand and waste through overcapacity; inefficiencies of owning or scaling processes; and stifled innovation in the face of time and cost to ramp projects. InformationWeek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Ask CIOs what they're worried about, and the No. 1 answer is speed. Fifty-seven percent of the IT leaders who responded to the InformationWeek 2012 Global CIO Survey cite "can't implement fast enough" as a top concern. The next biggest worry — not having enough budget — is fairly close, cited by 48 percent, followed by having no system to prioritize projects at 22 percent, having a poor understanding of customers (17 percent) and having poor relationships with business units (15 percent). It's an important finding from this year's Global CIO survey. More

5 overlooked BYOD mistakes to avoid
CIO Update    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Businesses of all shapes and sizes are struggling with the bring your own device phenomena. On one hand, BYOD is a boon. Employees get the devices they like. Often they pay for them out of their own pockets, and productivity goes up. On the other hand, support costs can also go up, bandwidth may become saturated and, if policies aren't crafted well, employees can end up feeling cheated by their employers. Creating a workable BYOD policy isn't rocket science, but it is a delicate balancing act. More

The ballad of the brave CIO
Fortune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Few key roles in a company are as dynamic as the CIO has been over the past 20 years. CIOs have come a long way, from implementing hardware and software packages in the 1990s to managing outside contractors when economics pushed IT departments to outsource software development and data centers. Yet another shift is now redefining the role of CIO, driven by two key technologies: Cloud and mobile. More

5 leadership skills CIOs, senators share
InformationWeek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
At first glance, Republican Sen. John McCain and FedEx's widely respected CIO Robert Carter may not appear to have much in common. McCain is best known for being a Senate leader and a presidential nominee. Carter, on the other hand, earned his stripes developing and implementing sophisticated IT systems. But if you ask CIO-turned-state-senator John Albers, many of the leadership skills honed in an IT shop are a perfect fit for political office. More
