The CIO scandal that could redefine the profession
IT World Canada
The way IT is perceived in the enterprise from now on may come down to whether you see Beth Jacob as a victim, a failure or both. When the CIO of Target stepped down following a data security breach that made headlines around the world, even Reuters was paying attention. "CIOs are in the spotlight," said a story that was picked up in a slew of media outlets. Though Target told Reuters that Jacob's resignation was her own decision, it was difficult not to see it as an admission or something, or at least a willingness to be the scapegoat. However that move would have profession-wide consequences.

Mindfulness in managing risk
By Dr. David Hillson
Mindfulness has its roots in Eastern religion. It is also used therapeutically to treat a variety of psychological conditions, as well as in coaching to encourage excellence in healthy people. Used properly, mindfulness can also make our risk management more effective. Being mindful means bringing your complete attention to your current experience on a moment-to-moment basis, being aware of everything in your surroundings, acknowledging what is there and accepting it as valid. It is raising questions about what role, if any, the CIO will play in digital innovation. Will they be leading the digital revolution, or will they be relegated to running the infrastructure?

Juniper CIO uses cloud to support 'consumerization of data center'
The Wall Street Journal
Bask Iyer, CIO of Juniper Networks Inc., said moving applications to the cloud required him to swap out Juniper's switches and routers for newer Juniper networking gear. He upgraded because increased reliance on software delivered over the Internet was slowing down the network. "I can't just say 'MicrosoftMSFT is running slow' — nobody here takes those answers," said Iyer. "We had to modernize the architecture."

In defense of the CIO: Why the role is important
CMSWire
We've said a lot about the chief information officer this month. The CIO role will fade away. CIOs should report to CMOs. Innovation escapes CIOs because they don't have the time. So what do you think, Mr. CIO? Mr. CIO for us today is Ian Cox, who was a finalist for the British Computer Society's CIO of the Year award in 2011 and was also ranked among the top 100 UK CIOs for 2012 by CIO Magazine. Ambitious IT pros seek COO role
CIO
Cynthia Hamburger spent years climbing the corporate IT ladder, including a stint as a CIO at Dun & Bradstreet, yet when she was offered the CIO post at Learning Ally, she politely declined. It wasn't Learning Ally's nonprofit business model or smaller stature that was the turnoff, and she clearly spied opportunity for technology-driven change at the company, which provides audiobooks and services for people with learning disabilities.

How to inspire a healthy and happy IT department
CIO Insight
Do your organization's managers simply pay lip service when it comes to health initiatives for employees? If so, they're making a business mistake. Obesity and other major diseases cost employers up to $93 billion per year in health insurance claims, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (For a company with 1,000 employees, the cost of obesity amounts to $277,000 per year, the CDC reports.) Beyond this, businesses will pay more due to absenteeism, disabilities and reduced work output than they would on direct health care costs as a result of an unhealthy workforce.
