"Classic is respectful for the people who are actually going to be keeping the lights on," while Wal-Mart goes through a significant IT modernization, Terrell told the InformationWeek Conference recently.

CIO interview: Darrell Stein, vice president of information systems at Reckitt Benckiser

Seven months after taking charge of the IT at consumer goods giant Reckitt Benckiser, Darrell Stein is pushing ahead with a strategy to increase digital revenues to at least 10 percent of sales in the next five years. According to Stein, Reckitt Benckiser's digital revenues are "negligible," so the aim is to create a strategy that generates significant sales and is heavily focused on data analytics.

CIOs reveal top concerns, retention not getting its due

Worries about information and systems security continue to keep most CIOs up at night, and in fact, security is the No. 1 concern among CIOs and CTOs. But many aren't placing proper priority on IT retention efforts, considering the growing skills gap in the market. CEOs will turn to CTO or CIO before marketers to lead digital transformation

The chief marketing officer is not valued as much as the chief technology officer or chief information officer in leading digital transformation of a business, according to a study by SapientNitro. All 50 chief executives of major European brands interviewed for the research said they were the leaders of digital transformation but 47 percent said they would turn to a CIO or CTO to lead the charge alongside them. Only 26 percent nominated a CMO.
