CIOs don't need to be business leaders
CIO    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Given the complexity of today's applications, it's folly to suggest that the future role of the CIO is less technical and more businesslike, columnist Bernard Golden writes. If anything, it's the opposite — the business side of the enterprise should embrace technology. More

Innovation is not CIO's main focus
The Pittsburgh Post Gazette    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Liam Durbin, CIO of Newspaper Operations for Block Communications, parent company of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, finds the droning on about innovation in IT extremely annoying. Innovation is not that big a part of the CIO role; it is a tantalizing distraction, he contends. More

5 ways IT leaders can get more staff feedback
InformationWeek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Most IT leaders are accustomed to dishing out constructive criticism to employees. But how many employees would feel comfortable criticizing their boss for an ill-conceived product launch or a poorly executed deployment? Many workers fear that rubbing a manager or CIO the wrong way could mean a poor annual performance review or a withheld bonus — or at least dirty looks. But the truth is IT leaders stand to lose the most from employee silence. More

Consumerization trend creates IT worries, worker benefits
Computerworld    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A Cisco-commissioned survey of 600 businesses found that 95 percent permit the use of employee-owned smartphones and tablets in the workplace. The survey also found that 76 percent of IT managers consider the consumerization of IT a positive for their companies because employees can be more productive and feel more satisfied with their jobs. Despite that value, however, BYOD has costs, especially for IT support. Cisco's survey found that 20 percent of all IT spending in 2014 will be for mobility initiatives, up from 10 percent in 2010. To gain a competitive advantage with mobile, CIO readiness is all
SearchCIO    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
How CIOs should be thinking about gaining a competitive advantage through the use of IT is a hot topic this year at CIO conferences and in headhunter circles. At the recent Gartner CIO Forum, for example, analysts pointed out that interest in how one's competitors are using technology to gain an advantage has risen sharply among business leaders. More

CIO    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
IT outsourcing has always been a double-edged sword for CIOs. What starts out as a cure for IT's ills always seems to cause more headaches down the road. Independent cloud-based IT service management tools could enable CIOs to wrestle back control of IT once and for all, argues A.T. Kearney's Arjun Sethi. More

5 IT budget presentation do's and don'ts
InformationWeek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As learning to do more with less becomes a national reality, many IT leaders are learning that strong presentation skills can go a long way toward getting approval of important projects. Making a case for an IT investment requires more, however, than piling on obscure acronyms and technical bells and whistles in presentations to corporate bean counters. More

How to make user experience count
CIO Update    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
IT is an industry that seems to be governed by acronyms, which, though often confusing, represent terms and ideas which are themselves confusing and often misleading. User experience management (UEM), or end user experience (EUE), or real user management (RUM), is a case in point. As the next-generation acronym to replace quality of experience (QoE) that reflects what goes on when real flesh-and-blood IT consumers are taken into account, it is also central to what I would call the "humanization of IT" — a richer and more complete vision than the one captured in the phrase the "consumerization of IT."
