Nominations are open for SIM's Leader of the Year Award
SIM
SIM is a national organization, but our strength lies at the local level. Last year, we recognized six volunteers onstage at SIMposium with our annual Leader of the Year Award.

Our innovative chapters constantly find new ways to grow, engage and challenge their membership. By developing engaging programs, driving successful fundraising events or directing outreach initiatives, your dedicated chapter leaders lead the charge in making SIM the most respected organization for IT leaders.

Before Aug. 15, nominate a local member who you best embodies the innovation, dedication and commitment that we pride ourselves on as an organization.

Read more and submit your nomination at Leader of the Year Nominations.

Top CIOs reveal their biggest information technology issues
SearchCIO
What was your biggest IT challenge of the past year? SearchCIO posed that question to a series of leading CIOs at the 2014 MIT Sloan CIO Symposium in Cambridge, Massachusetts. These prominent CIOs, hailing from such organizations as Verizon, Fidelity Investments and Cancer Treatment Centers of America, quickly disabused us of any notion that their responses would be the same old canned diatribes against lack of budget or missing a seat at the executive table. No, today's CIOs are grappling with a wave of new technologies that can bolster the business, but there's barely enough time to evaluate them.

CIOs told: Leave innovation to the CMO
FierceCIO
Much has been written lately about the relationship between CIOs and chief marketing officers, and now IT leaders are being told they should leave innovation to the marketing side of the house. A new study by CEB — formerly the Corporate Executive Board — finds that marketing, finance and other parts of the business are better positioned to drive digital innovation in their organizations. This comes as bad news to CIOs who were just getting used to the idea that they should be leading the digital transformation of their organization.

Take a day off — a real day off
By Catherine Iste
When is the last time you took a day off? A real day off? A no-checking-email, do-what-you-want, Ferris Bueller kind of day off? In a recent meeting about using your brain to train your mind, we spent a lot of time discussing how rare it is that we take the time to sit with the good things happening to and around us and just appreciate them. Appreciating the moment does not necessarily mean you are in some meditative state doing yoga all day. Nor does it require a trip to the spa. It really just means going through your day purposefully.

CIOs adjust to enterprise tech as a fashion statement
CIO
CIOs reeling from their recent loss of technology purchasing power — as it shifts to the front business lines in marketing, finance, human resources and other departments — will find a hero in Ralph Loura, vice president and CIO at The Clorox Company. In truth, today's CIOs take their marching orders from line-of-business managers while dealing with rogue enterprise apps and cloud services on a massive scale. In fact, 40 percent of all IT spending is now outside of the traditional IT budget, according to a recent report from CEB. But at an event in San Francisco recently, Loura reminded his peers, "User-led is not the same as user-centric." In other words, not everyone gets a vote.

Facing still competition for IT staff, CIO Fernando Gonzalez has changed his focus from recruiting college grads to recruiting young men and women right out of high school. "I can teach technology," says Gonzalez, CIO at Byer California, a $400 million women's apparel manufacturer based on San Francisco. "What I need is people with a real customer service attitude. Moderating a panel at the recent Women in Technology Summit, though, CIO.com columnist Rob Enderle discovered that women outside the C-suite are driving change at many technology companies. Credit a willingness to embrace analytics.

5 reasons why diversity is crucial for success
By Scott Steinberg
As you may have noticed, most working professionals tend to surround themselves with like-minded individuals who have similar backgrounds, experiences and education. But while it's important that everyone on a team buy into the same overarching vision and share similar goals, there are some compelling reasons why it's crucial to work with others who possess different perspectives, skills and thoughts on how to achieve desired outcomes — even if their opinions may run counter to ours.
