SIM Outreach/STEM initiatives
SIM
SIM is in the process of broadening its STEM Outreach efforts, which is our attempt to get more young people into the IT Pipeline. We are helping our 34 Chapters share information about outreach activities and resources so they can learn from and collaborate with one another to solve the problem of the looming IT Skills Shortage.

In April at the SIM Chapter Leadership Summit in Denver, we discussed how this skills shortage developed, what we are currently doing about it (for example, SIM Chapters collectively donated more than $160,000 in computing-related scholarship money in 2012.) We also discussed ways to ramp up to do even more.

'Owning the data center does not make sense for CIOs anymore'
ComputerWeekly
Organizations must respond rapidly to changes in the marketplace and increasingly they are relying on the CIO to deliver IT power which can give them competitive advantage today and in the future — despite the fact that the rapid pace of technological change is making the crystal ball look very cloudy.

Mobile boom means more work for IT
InformationWeek
Mobile is everywhere, right? Just wait. In five years that will double, when another 1.7 billion people will access the Internet for the first time using a mobile device. Along with them will come IT, in a figurative sense. IT has sat on the sidelines as companies have gone mobile, but that's changing now, says a PricewaterhouseCoopers executive. "IT has been locked down," Daniel Eckert, director and CTO of PwC's emerging technologies group, said during a conversation about recent PwC data on mobile IT.

How effective is your response plan in the face of a breach?
CEB
A core security responsibility is to manage the risks facing a company's information and to determine appropriate levels of protection. Security's job has been complicated by the rise of APTs and the development of the "new work environment" — the former involves sophisticated threats that are impossible to fully prevent and the latter admonishes against measures that limit employee productivity.

It's time to rebrand enterprise IT expertise

CIOs can stop apologizing for their technology know-how. As business users become more technology-savvy, IT expertise is needed more than ever to ensure business success. That was the message delivered by five CIOs from SAS Institute Inc., EMC Corp., SAP AG, Avaya Inc. and J&J Pharmaceuticals during a panel discussion at the recent MIT Sloan CIO Symposium.

How to maximize your work productivity on the road
CIO
A new role that requires traveling takes some getting used to, especially if you rarely leave the office. It suddenly becomes critical to squeeze in that bit of extra work while waiting for an airport transfer, relaxing at the hotel in the evenings, shuffling between meetings or even when waiting for clients to show up for those meetings. With this in mind, here are several pointers to help maximize your productivity when traveling.

Cozy CIO-vendor relationships are more dangerous than ever
InfoWorld
It's a well-established protocol: People buy from people, especially the ones they like and trust. CIOs are no exception, and many benefit greatly from long-established supplier relationships. But there's a fine line between healthy and unhealthy interactions, a risk that's exacerbated by a limited amount of love (and budget) to divide across a countless landscape of courters.

Business and social network apps belong together: Will they ever meet?
SearchCIO
CIOs charged with or charged up about enterprise social tools still have their work cut out for them. How to reduce IT operational costs
CIO Insight
Cost savings are all that CIOs are thinking about each day. The business side is constantly putting pressure on CIOs to reduce the impact the IT budget is having on the company. And in many cases, CIOs have achieved those goals. But in a surprising number of cases, they've failed at that. In fact, a new study, Challenging the Status Quo on Maintenance Contracts and Refresh Cycles to Lower Costs, from Network Hardware and Forrester Consulting, in which 304 IT decision makers were polled, has found that in far too many cases, companies haven't been successful at reducing their IT costs because, well, they don't know about existing opportunities.
