Rise of the 'business consumer' presents opportunities, demands for IT
    FierceCIO
Research firm Gartner has identified the rise of the "business consumer," and need for IT to create a more flexible digital workplace for these employees to thrive in. On the firm's blog, Gartner research vice president Matthew Cain noted that, "Starting with the rise of PCs and the Internet era, users have a greater influence on IT strategy and we are currently witnessing the rise of what Gartner calls the "business consumer" — an employee for whom business activities are one part of a wider lifestyle. Individuals do not stop being consumers when they to go work. Business consumers often make more consumer-like choices in their workplace computing tools and styles to increase efficiency."

How to avoid a CMO vs. CIO war
    Forbes
According to a 2013 report by Accenture, only 1 in 10 marketing and IT executives say collaboration between CIOs and CMOs is at the right level. That may sound surprising, but when you consider that CMOs are projected to spend more on information technology and analytics than CIOs by 2017, it probably shouldn't be.

3-D printing: Time for the CIO to build a business case?
    ZDNet
Tech chiefs are constantly bombarded with technologies promising to be the next big thing, making it hard for them to know what to watch and what to ignore. 3-D printing is a digital technology that many observers feel will become increasingly important: Analyst firm Gartner, for example, has put 3-D printing on a list of critical technologies that CIOs need to understand, and argued that 3-D printing has "formidable, transformational potential" that CIOs should not underestimate.

Why CIOs must rethink how they measure success
    CIO
"Ask finance chiefs about their frustrations with IT and you are bound to get an earful," begins the recent Deloitte report "Evaluating IT: A CFO's Perspective." "Excessive investments made. Multiple deadlines missed. Little ROI achieved. The list goes on." After nearly a decade of talking, reading and wringing our hands about business/IT alignment, relations between IT leaders and business leaders are better than they once were, but they're still not great. And for our organizations to succeed in an increasingly tech-dependent future, better-but-not-great is insufficient. Now that technology is a key element of every organization's success, no one can afford an IT-business disconnect anymore.

    Are your virtual servers safe?
    CIO Insight
More than half of businesses using virtualized infrastructure have only "partially" implemented a security solution to protect their virtual servers, according to a new survey by Kaspersky Lab. This troubling statistic — essentially, one in two virtual servers is vulnerable to cybercriminals, spies and assorted malcontents — is especially troubling given that businesses are increasingly storing valuable business information in their virtual environments.
