CIOs can curb cost cutting with storytelling

CIOs can vanquish the traditional cost-cutting exacted on their budgets by using plain, simple language to explain the value technologies deliver to the business, said Gartner Inc. analyst Barbara Gomolski. "CFOs, or even CEOs, may not have the IT vision in their head," said Gomolski, during a recent session at the Gartner Symposium IT/xpo. "CIOs need to be able to articulate how IT adds value."

How the CIO role is changing as business needs evolve

A recent survey from IT staffing firm Modis reaffirms what we all know: The role of CIOs, and the IT department they direct, is changing. Not only do the vast majority of companies view their CIOs as critical members of company structure, they also expect that role to grow in the future. "With tech being more and more on the forefront of businesses, we were interested to find out, where is the CIO seat now, where is his relationship and does he have the same kind of impact other C-level people have?" Modis President Jack Cullen says.

But things are different today. Today, we are seeing the rise of the "born again CIO." By far the top effort is spent on aligning IT with business, as it is still largely perceived as a cost centre and a supporter but not a driver of business innovation.
