IT Trends Study wishes you a happy and healthy holiday season!
SIM
The results of the 35th Anniversary SIM IT Trends Study point to a time of profound change. The pace is increasing in the technology, economic, and geopolitical environments; and they are getting more complicated. The enterprise is becoming more digitized and connected. In order to ensure robust, aligned and secure IT services for their progressively more complex organizations, the CIO and their team must manage increasingly multifaceted infrastructures, organization structures, vendor portfolios, and governance processes, while also constantly scanning for new and emerging technologies to provide business value and help shape the future of the enterprise. And that's only part of the reason we believe that the CIO position is the most complicated and demanding job in most organizations today.

Computerworld
Paul Glen, CEO of Leading Geeks, writes: "One of the most persistent ideas I've heard in my decades in IT is that we geeks want democracy at work. We want a lot of other things related to what we value and how we'd like our workplaces to operate. Somehow this gets shorthanded to 'we want democracy,' but what we really want are much more specific things."

Ram Charan: Never a better time for CIOs (and algorithms)
The Wall Street Journal
It's no secret that algorithms rule in the era of Google Inc., Amazon.com Inc. and Facebook Inc. Chief information officers that understand how to help the business use technology to create and measure those equations predicting customer behavior stand to succeed, said leadership expert Ram Charan. "There's not a better time for CIOs than now," Charan, who has coached CEOs at companies such as Bank of America Corp. and General Electric Co., said in a recent interview at CIO Journal's office. "This is the best time for them, if they rise to the challenge."

Here's something your CIO can do for you: Integrate all those business apps
VentureBeat
It's time to reconsider the role of the chief information officer. While new technologies have dramatically changed the way businesses operate in the last several years, the structure at the top has largely remained the same. The rapid growth of applications designed for specific business users, especially those offered through SaaS and mobile platforms, has led to what many refer to as the "consumerization of IT." But the traditional CIO still often assumes the role of a gatekeeper, making top-down decisions about which technologies the company will adopt and when.
