IT Trends Study: Most-used performance measures for CIOs and in-house IT
SIM
From Oct. 29: Ever wonder what the most important and widely used IT performance measures are for CIOs and in-housel IT? In this year's IT Trends Study, SIM members were provided a list of 33 metrics and asked to "select up to three... for internal IT, outsourced IT, and their own performance."

The results are quite revealing. The performance metrics for CIOs and internal IT have striking similarities, as well as differences. "User satisfaction," "value of IT to the business," and "availability (uptime)" are top five measures for both CIOs and in-house IT. Two of these three focus on business performance, providing evidence of IT becoming more focused on the business. A trend supported by many of this year's findings.

The CIO scandal that could redefine the profession
IT World Canada
From March 19: The way IT is perceived in the enterprise from now on may come down to whether you see Beth Jacob as a victim, a failure or both. When the CIO of Target stepped down following a data security breach that made headlines around the world, even Reuters was paying attention. "CIOs are in the spotlight," said a story that was picked up in a slew of media outlets. Though Target told Reuters that Jacob's resignation was her own decision, it was difficult not to see it as an admission or something, or at least a willingness to be the scapegoat. However that move would have profession-wide consequences.

A common question is: What should I focus on if I want to be a CIO someday? The answer is complicated and doesn't always please the person who asked. You must understand technology, of course, but most of what it takes to become an effective CIO has nothing to do with technology. The better question to ask is: Which skills do most CEOs want their CIOs to have?

SIM Advanced Practices Council: How to reduce costs while staying agile
CIO Insight
From April 30: One way in which multinational companies successfully compete in today's ultra-competitive global marketplace is by reducing costs through economies of scale and scope. However, accomplishing this goal isn't easy, and some companies never succeed. Standardizing and rationalizing systems, processes and data require collaboration and compromise across both business units and geographic locations. Even when senior management exerts sufficient pressure, significant disruptions and uncertainties often ensue. In successful cases, companies gain global efficiencies, but they often do so at the cost of local flexibility, which is essential for competing globally.
