Each year Grass Roots conducts an annual Meetings Industry Report. With the 2011 edition just complete, Site International Foundation Trustee Debbie Donaldson and the team at Grass Roots share highlights with Site Source readers.

Amidst frozen salaries and slashed bonuses, many might assume that staff motivation was no longer in fashion. In fact, the reverse is true. Organisations that have undergone restructuring are inevitably left with staff unsure about their futures.

As a result, these companies have to look at how to restore morale and to get the best from a slimmed-down work force. Consequently, motivation programmes are back on the corporate agenda, and corporates are turning to tried and tested methods including the overseas incentive.

Site celebrates Fay Beauchine, CITE, for recently being inducted into the Convention Industry Council Hall of Leaders during a gala presentation at AIBTM in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A. A long-time member and leader of Site, Beauchine currently serves as the Site International Foundation immediate past president. She shares her thoughts on being honored as a new member of the CIC Hall of Leaders.



Loving what you do and feeling like it matters

Moving people around the globe, helping them connect the dots whether it is for commercial business or for creating personal travel memories, this business is an incredible place to be. There is so much opportunity for enriching perspectives. That's what our business does. It gives people new opinions, inspiration, life-changing moments, knowledge … and stories to tell. I have been fortunate to work for great organizations like Northwest Airlines (now Delta) and Carlson Marketing. Both are terrific employers with enabling corporate cultures. Because of the values of these companies, I've been able to be involved in advancing incentive travel, tourism and meetings as an economic driver and as a platform for cultural understanding.

We have all witnessed and lived through a painful and difficult time in the last few years in the industry. Winston Churchill said, "When you are going through hell, keep going," and that is what multitudes in this industry did. People didn't quit when they were tired, they accepted more and they often were paid less. They listened to the voices of their customers and focused on the right things. It required discipline, effort and sacrifice. And our industry has survived two difficult years, thanks to many people working at the grassroots level, and to many association leaders, including Site, who collaborated to support our industry.

We gained strength, courage and confidence with this experience, and we have learned how to defend and articulate the value of our industry. As we contemplate the future, it holds promise and no doubt something we cannot predict. The journey is really one like white water rafting. It's never dull and we are continually splashed. Our raft moves quickly down the river, and we must navigate boulders and logs along the way. One thing for sure, we need to paddle together.

7th Site Index Study will generate debate

The Site International Foundation recently released the seventh edition in the series of research studies dedicated to the motivational events and incentive travel market. The Focus on Destination Management Companies reflects the current evolution and potential conflict for the value chain in the production and distribution of motivational events and incentive travel programs. Steve O'Malley, Site International Foundation president and senior vice president, Maritz Travel reported, "As we have emerged from the great recession, every organization is seeking to rebuild and rebrand for future strength. This means many organizations are not staying within traditional boundaries." Read the recent press release. One telling statistic from this study was that 55 percent of DMC's agree or strongly agree that they are finding it necessary to become a one-stop shop for motivational travel programs. What do the results of this study tell us? There is a question in the marketplace about where incentive houses, venue finders or site selection firms, hoteliers and others fit into today's incentive travel program design and execution. More

New Research Focuses on Incentive Travel Rewards as a Meaningful Motivator

From Dec. 15, 2011: The Site International Foundation and the Incentive Travel Council (ITC) released part one of its in-depth study, Incentive Travel: The Participant Viewpoint. Believing that business performance can be positively impacted through the utilization of incentive travel reward and recognition programs, the two organizations developed a study that would deliver a deeper understanding of what makes a program meaningful, motivational and memorable to the participant who is working to earn the award. In this first installment, the study focused on what the 1,003 program participants found to be meaningful. For the purposes of this study, meaningful represents an incentive travel program that has clearly defined rules, fair and attainable goals, effective communications, and on-going feedback.

Site International Foundation President, Steve O'Malley stated, "Attitudes and attention of today's workforce is rapidly evolving. Understanding what people perceive as worth their added time and effort and playing into those values is key to unleashing the maximum potential of people powered businesses. As we considered shifts in program models it is certainly better to base any adjustments on gathered data than on assumptions. We are pleased that the collaborative efforts of the Site International Foundation and the Incentive Travel Council could draw upon data that was derived from such a large group of incentive program participants."

This study was unique in that it surveyed both the perspectives of the award earners and the non-earners. Results from this first installment chart participant feelings toward comparative award types, attitudes toward the companies running the programs and the degree of motivation to earn the award. From May 19, 2011: Tomorrow's industry leaders are getting involved today, as evident from Site Young Leader Kevin Edmunds. Site Source caught up with him as he prepares for upcoming events, including the Site Academy for Young Leaders in Cancun, Mexico.

As a member of the Palace Resorts team, it is the most rewarding feeling to have a client trust your word and then come back with an amazing experience. This drive for success keeps me excited to be a part of the motivational experience and incentive travel industry. I am excited to be involved with the Site Young Leaders, as it is groups like these that give the younger generation a voice. From June 9, 2011: Site Source recently caught up with Krzysztof Michniewicz who, along with Incentive Concept Poland, was his country’s first Site Crystal Awards winner in 2008 for Most Outstanding Incentive Travel Award Program. He shares about the importance of this honor and top of mind issues for his region of the world. In the months ahead, Poland will be experiencing two big events. Later this year, Poland will take over the EU presidency, which will bring many meetings and conferences to Warsaw and other major Polish cities. In 2012, Poland will be hosting the UEFA European Football Championship along with the Ukraine. This is another great opportunity to showcase Poland: great venues, beautiful cities and landscapes, and warm hospitality.

As a winner of the Site Crystals Award, we have raised the bar for ourselves. Being recognized was a great success; we are the first Polish company which was honored this way and it was also the first time when we took part in the competition. Winning this award confirmed to us we were headed in the right direction, and boosted the morale and esteem of the team.
