White House backs House road funding bill; conservative groups decry 'budget gimmicks,' 'fee increases'

The White House on Monday backed a $10 billion bill in the Republican House that would extend federal transportation funding through next spring. The surprise endorsement of the bill, which is scheduled to come up for a vote in the House on Tuesday, clears the way for a deal with Democrats in the Senate.

The 31st annual event provided the ideal forum for those who operate temperature-controlled equipment to meet with their peers to discuss problems, share ideas, and seek solutions unique to their specialized area of operations.

FTR: Trucking's headwinds now include higher labor, recruiting costs

Transportation-forecasting firm FTR has advised that the industry outlook derived from its latest Trucking Conditions Index (TCI) data has "moderated," yet remains "still in solidly positive territory" with a May reading of 5.74. The TCI "reflects some headwinds" that are affecting truck-fleet results, the firm pointed out.

Computer-assisted logs: To print or not to print

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's changes to guidance around the issue of whether users of laptop- and mobile device-assisted logging programs must print and physically sign their logs may not have cleared up roadside issues as much as thought by some. This despite the fact that the federal summary of the guidance change suggested a wholesale removal of any printing requirement for those using programs capable of being digitally signed.
