Range safety: 4 important rules to follow

As an NRA-certified range safety officer, I take range safety seriously. Guns are dangerous, and people can be dumb or careless. Whenever I shoot, I am always refreshing and practicing safety rules in addition to my drills. As I explain to my students, the quickest way to fail my course is to shoot the instructor. Here are four simple, but important shooting rules to follow.

'Guntry clubs': A new range of luxury

At Elite Shooting Sports in Manassas, Virginia, gun clubs have gone upscale. It's outfitted with leather chairs, shops and a snack bar, and the gun industry affectionately calls it a "guntry club." The facility is 65,000 square feet of bright lights, polished wood, flat screen TVs and state-of-the-art equipment. "It was our intent to appeal to a diverse group of shooters," owner Greg Wodack said.

Bill to allow guns on campus sent to Texas House
The Texas Tribune
The Texas Senate has already passed a bill allowing handguns on college campuses. Now the House is poised to consider its own measure. The lower chamber's Homeland Security and Public Safety Committee voted 6-3 along party lines to send House Bill 937 by state Rep. Allen Fletcher, R-Cypress, to the full House.

Tennessee legislature strips local governments of power to ban guns in parks
The Associated Press via Chattanooga Times-Free Press
People with handgun carry permits would be able to carry their weapons on the grounds of the state Capitol under a proposal that overwhelmingly passed the Senate recently. The amended legislation was approved 26-7. It would also strip city and county governments of the power to ban guns in parks, playgrounds and sports fields, which was the main intent of the bill.
