Armed school employees permitted, Texas Attorney General Abbott says

Texas school districts that designate employees to carry handguns do not violate state laws banning concealed firearms at sporting events or during school board meetings, Attorney General Greg Abbott said in an opinion released recently. Known as a guardian plan, the safety measure provides armed protection for smaller, rural school districts that cannot afford to create a police force, hire resource officers or contract with local police departments for part-time help, according to state Rep. Joe Pickett, D-El Paso.

ATF: Nearly 20,000 firearms lost or stolen last year from FFL holders

The nation's more than 60,000 Federal Firearms License holders reported 19,601 firearms lost or stolen in 2013, according to a new report published by the ATF but mandated by the White House. The FFL Theft-Losses Report, compiled by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, draws its information from the agency's Firearms Tracing System, which tracks guns reported lost or stolen firearms reported by FFLs.

Obama requests $1.1 billion for gun control

President Barack Obama has requested $1.1 billion and the Department of Justice asked for $382.1 million for gun control "to protect Americans from gun violence." Included in the DOJ's $382.1 million figure is a request for $2 million for smart gun technology grants. According to The Washington Beacon, Obama's $1.1 billion "includes $182 million to support the president's 'Now is the Time' gun safety initiative."

Report: FBI visiting gun shops to investigate 'people talking about big government'

Moms and mayors partner to fight gun violence

Mayors Against Illegal Guns has teamed up with Moms Demand Action to launch a new initiative aimed at tackling the problem of gun violence in the country. In a press release, the newly formed "Everytown for Gun Safety" announced a campaign to turn out 1 million voters who will elect candidates that support gun safety legislation. Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, founder of Mayors Against Illegal guns and Chair of the new organization, is contributing $50 million of his personal fortune to the cause.

Angry New Yorkers shred gun registrations in deadline day protests

Firearms' owners and Second Amendment activists in New York made it loud and clear to lawmakers that they weren't on board with a new gun registration law that took effect on Tax Day, gathering in downtown Buffalo and shredding the very documents they were supposed to fill out and sign. The protest drew dozens and was aimed at turning back the legislative tide of the hastily passed SAFE Act that as of April 15 bans state residents from buying certain types of weapons and requires those who already own those types of weapons to register them with the government.

GOP fears executive order on biometric guns

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, is warning the Obama administration to not issue an executive order requiring that all new guns be made with biometric technology, such as finger-print recognition or bracelets. Cornyn raised the issue in a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, who in testimony earlier this month highlighted biometric bracelets and fingerprint identification as a safety issue.

BATFE publicly confirms administration's ammunition import ban

April 7, BATFE issued a "special advisory" indicating the agency's official position on 5.45×39 7N6 ammunition. The advisory states that "the ammunition is 'armor piercing' under federal law and is therefore not importable."
