A bill that would significantly reducing the fee to get a license to carry a handgun in Texas is now on Greg Abbott's desk. The proposal, Senate Bill 16, would reduce the first-time fee for a license to carry from $140 to $40 and the annual renewal fee from $70 to $40. The fee would cover the Department of Public Safety's cost to administer the license program as well as $27 needed for county, state and federal background checks, according to the bill's author, state Sen. Robert Nichols, R-Jacksonville.

Legislation that would allow prison officers to carry concealed firearms to and from work is being considered in the U.S. Senate. The measure — H.R. 613, also known as the Lieutenant Osvaldo Albarati Correctional Officer Self-Protection Act — was reintroduced by Republican Sen. Pat Toomey and would require the Bureau of Prisons to provide a lock box in which prison officers can store firearms so that they may carry to and from work, the Daily Item reported. The bill has passed through the House of Representatives and is currently being considered in the Senate.

Smith & Wesson's new short barrel Model 66 and 69 Combat Magnum revolvers are on their way to consumers, the company announced. The new models, now shipping, feature a 2.75-inch barrel and stainless steel frame and cylinder. Chambered in .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum, the Combat Magnum revolvers were designed for magnum shooters seeking a medium size frame.
