'School marshals' bill headed to Perry's office
San Antonio Express-News
The "Protection of Texas Children Act," which provides for the creation of "school marshals," was approved by the Senate, overcoming four Democrats' nay votes, and now awaits Gov. Rick Perry's signature. Nearing a terminal deadline, it's one of a few gun-friendly bills to survive the waning legislative session while several others have been stymied by Democrats.

Are background checks a wedge issue for 2014?
The Washington Post
The Senate's rejection of a popular expansion of background checks for firearms last month marked an abrupt end to the campaign for gun restrictions after the Newtown, Conn., shootings. But the "no" votes of 46 senators also represented a political gamble: that voters would not punish them for going against public will.

The safety payoff of the big business of gun training
Marketplace
You'd think that, with all the talk in Washington about the IRS, Benghazi, the AP's phone records, and oh yeah, immigration, that the debate over gun control is over. But a few determined senators still want to bring the issue of expanded background checks up for a vote sometime this summer.

Waking the dragon — How Feinstein fiddled while America burned
The Iowa State Daily
Along with bombs and bombers, guns seem to be all the media wants to talk about these days. Death is sexy to our miscreant media, especially when people are killed on purpose. And when that happens, it's all the newspapers and news stations will print and broadcast, in turn making these events appear worse than they are in reality.

Best pistol ever: What makes the 1911 so good?
Shooting Times
For more than 10 decades the Colt Government Model 1911 has been without challenge the most recognized, most imitated, most influential and most used semiautomatic handgun in the world. Some call it the best pistol ever. It is to autoloaders what the Colt Single Action Army is to revolvers. If anything, the Model 1911 pistol — in all its forms, chamberings and variations — is more popular today worldwide than it has been at any time since John Browning applied for the basic patents underlying its design. No other firearm on earth can match its record for longevity, versatility and performance.

Demand for gun training grows among women
WTVF-TV
Interest in gun training classes has never been higher in some parts of Middle Tennessee. In fact, it's so high for one Bedford County training group that it held its first gun safety class for women only. Defensive Consulting Group offered the class on Mother's Day weekend because its owners said sometimes women tell them they're not as comfortable taking the class around men, and they wanted to make sure their students learn gun safety skills in as comfortable environment as possible.

California law takes effect on microstamping guns
The Sacramento Bee
A California law that requires all semi-automatic handguns to be equipped with technology that stamps its identifying information on bullet casings is now in effect after years of delays. Though signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2007, the law couldn't take effect as it was supposed to in 2010 because of patents on the technology, including at least one that had been bought up by a gun rights group to delay the law's implementation.

Tactical shooting not just for law enforcement, sport gaining popularity
The Republic
The buzzer sounded and Gary Johnson grabbed an empty handgun from the table, picked up a full magazine, loaded it into the pistol, pulled back the slide, and began shooting.
